Pros: Perfect night's sleep, ultra comfort
Cons: Expensive (but worth it)
My first experience with this bed was at a luxury hotel in South Africa a few years ago. I loved the feel of it, but couldn't justify replacing an almost brand new Simmons mattress that was that was purchased by my ex (a doctor) who convinced me that extra firm mattresses were the best choice for people with back problems. Many researchers have tried to determine which mattress is best and why, but the overwhelming conclusion is that personal choice and individual tastes dictate the result. Even Consumer Reports couldn't make a definitive choice. After having slept on this bed for a month, I know I'm sleeping better and waking more refreshed.
Both my husband and I are in our early 50's.My husband has an arthritic shoulder which wakes him at night if he rolls on it. This bed has solved that problem. He no longer has a sore shoulder or stiff back in the morning. I have a bone spur in my neck which often is painful after sleeping, but I haven't felt it at all in the last four weeks. I'm also sway backed and used to often be tender in the mornings. Not now. I'm also having hot flashes at night and was having trouble getting back to sleep and thus waking my husband up all night. With this bed, you never feel the motion from the other side, so that problem is gone. For the first time in years, I'm getting eight hours and more of solid, uninterrupted sleep and never feel tired during the day. For that feeling, it's worth the high price! Though everyone talks about sleep, don't forget that this mattress is excellent for other activities as it takes the stress off weight bearing joints!
The type of memory foam used in this mattress was developed by NASA to help astronauts absorb G forces. It is a dense, high viscose foam that conforms to one's shape, eliminating pressure points. It's the only brand endorsed by NASA. There's never a "crater" which develops over time in traditional beds. Also, dust mites cannot accumulate in this material, so it's a good choice for allergic individuals. The mattress never needs to be flipped or turned. There are "knock off" brands which are cheaper, but we liked the money back guarantee and the 20 year warranty offered by this company.
For a review, I try to present both sides of a product, but I honestly can't say anything negative about this bed. It's thicker than some, the fitted sheets need to have deep corner pockets. You won't see these beds on sale, but we bought ours in a furniture store which offered a gift card for 20% of the purchase price. With that, we could buy a nice chair. I've also seen them offered at a lower price on ebay.
Tempur-Pedic has a website which has a list of hotels with these beds, so it's possible to try one for a night if the in-home trial option isn't feasible. The bottom line is that I have found the perfect bed which has solved all our sleeping problems. I can't wait to sleep in it at night, and haven't been sleeping on the couch any more. Even my two cats are constantly napping together on it..and that is very unusual!
