| cinnamon203's Full Review: Angela Wilkes - The Children's Step-By-Step Cook B... |
Angela Wilkes did a great job on The Children's Step-by-Step Cookbook, but I think she went a little too advanced for young children. Older children can probably handle it just fine, but for younger children, it seems a little over their heads.
My daughter and I tried to make a recipe from the book but gave up because we couldn't find the ingredients anywhere. Some hard-to-find ingredients inlcuded apricot nectar and raspberry syrup. The instructions were the part that really got to me. Angela used words and phrases that children couldn't comprehend. There were also some recipes that probably wouldn't appeal to young children. Some of those recipes include Egg Salad Sandwich Filling, Asparagus Tart, Spinach Tart, Zucchini Pizza, Tuna Pizza, Tuna Potato, No-Bake Fruitcake, and Baked Bananas. Some recipes that would appeal include the Milk Shakes, Popcorn, Frozen Fruit Bars, Chocolate-Dipped Fruit, and Gingerbread Cookies. Skills expected of the user include knowing how to dice, shred, chop, crush, pit, core, cream, sift, knead, whisk, and glaze.
It also kind of got to me that there were too many recipes that required knives and other sharp objects.
When children hit late grade school is the time that they should buy this book, if they're interested. If they buy it any younger, don't expect them to understand hardly anything. If they are in late grade school, then they'll probably be able to cook the recipes, because I will say that the step-by-step photographs help quite a bit.
The cookbook isn't as hard as regular cookbooks, but I still wouldn't recommend it to anyone in early grade school or lower.
The cookbook can be a wonder with older children, but it'll most likely be a mess with younger ones.
