The China Bride
Mary Jo Putney
Ballantine
In 1832, a freezing Troth Mei-Lian Montgomery, Lady Maxwell, reaches England where she faints at the sight of Dominic Renbourne. When she awakens, she learns that Dom is the identical twin of her beloved Kyle, Lord Maxwell. Troth who is half-Chinese and half-Scottish tells her story that ended with Kyle's death.
Kyle wanders the globe seeking an inner truth. He knows his journey ends here in China because he has vowed to return to England shortly. He enjoys Macao and Canton, though he feels he could have been in any European city. He desperately wants to see the Temple of Hoshan, a place where foreign devils are forbidden. The ordinary Jin Kang is assigned to assist or spy depending on your view Kyle in his stay. Through a series of events, some dangerous, Kyle finds out that the innocuous male Jin is actually the beautiful Mei-Lian. He convinces her to take him to the temple in exchange for him taking her to her Scottish relatives. The adventures of Mei-Lian and Kyle begin that lead to her becoming his wife, her reaching England, and she informing his relatives that he died.
Mary Jo Putney received much acclaim from reviewers and fans for her wonderful historical romance, The Wild Child. The sequel, THE CHINA BRIDE is even better. The story line focuses on an exciting look at nineteenth century China and at how the English and Scottish deal with a mixed-blooded Asian. The audience will savor the trip into China and understand the sophisticated prejudices in England and Scotland to turn Troth Mei-Lian into Lady Maxwell or Troth and in China to turn her into Jin or Mei-Lian. Ms. Putney will gain new readers amongst historical fiction fans as well as the plaudits from romance readers.
