Darkmistress's Full Review: Laurie Garrett - The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging...
Not so long ago Ruin13 and I were standing in the warehouse discussing this wonderful book I had read on various diseases. I had read it during my heavy epidemic period when I read about a dozen books before being so grossed out by Hot Zone that I stopped. Unfortunately, in reading that number of books I had forgotten the names of the books I read. Since it was entirely too rational to go out to the sales floor and look on the shelves until I recognized the book, I quizzed Ruin13 as she is also interested in infectious diseases and she shelves that section. We had been doing this for months (off and on) so it is a general topic of discussion for us. It helps that her brother is doing disaster planning for the city of Rochester (including biological attack scenarios) and that her boyfriend is currently a resident who plans to specialize in infectious diseases (plus his father is already a specialist in the same field.)
So we were going around on this subject and she frowned at me and said, "It wasn’t The Coming Plague by Laurie Garrett, was it?"
I paused. I remembered back to a conversation I had with a customer, shortly after reading the book when I recommended it for her son who was doing a report on sick buildings. "Garrett sounds right. Is the book orange and black?"
"The cover is orange with black letters. Go out and look on the floor. It was right at the end of a shelf last time I saw it."
And there it was, in all its orange and black lettered glory. The single best book on epidemics I have ever read. I looked at the table of contents. Chapters on most major modern plagues. Clear concise language that a layman can understand, but without disgusting details to gross out aforementioned layman. A good enough book that I remember what I learned and remember it as an excellent read nearly five years after having read it. I went back to the warehouse. "That’s it."
"I just bought a copy for my brother for Christmas and then I found out that (her boyfriend’s parents) have an autographed copy."
So, don’t just take it from me that this is a good book. Take it from the disaster planner for the city of Rochester and from a doctor with many years experience in infectious diseases.
