| jps246's Full Review: The Cove |
Not really up for one of Mohegans fancier restaurants but want something a step above just a basic place to eat? The Cove might just be the answer for you. Its located in front of the three find dining restaurants in the Earth Casino and it features a bit of the cuisine from all three in addition to its own choices.
The only problem is that The Cove doesnt take reservations so at busier times, there can be quite the line and hence, quite the wait.
Where is it?
The Cove is located in the Mohegan Sun Resort. Its on the outer ring of the Casino of the Earth, directly in front of The Longhouse, Pompeii & Caesar, and Bamboo Forest, Mohegans three fine dining restaurants in this portion of the resort.
Whats there
This is kind of cool besides the seating for The Cove itself, there is also a bar area for seating (same menu as The Cove) and a noodle bar, a raw bar, and a mini-pizzeria that have their own individual menus based on their features. So if youve got the desire for some oysters head to the raw bar. Some Chinese noodles? Go to the noodle bar. These are seated apart from the normal seating at The Cove, so its best to ask the hostess if you want to sit at one of the bars.
Seating, Ambiance and Service
For The Cove the seating covers the area in front of the three fine dining restaurants. It can get kind of cramped and crowded and while there are a number of tables, for a restaurant this popular, there really arent a ton of tables (hence the long lines at busy times).
Theres little to no ambiance here. You are pretty much out in the casino with slot machines and table games not all that far from you. You are surrounded by the noise of the restaurant and the noise of the casino.
The service isnt outstanding here but it isnt all that bad either. Weve generally been satisfied with the service and if there is a problem, the place is small enough where its pretty easy to flag someone down to help you out.
Now you might think with all that I dont really like The Cove, but I do. I find it to be a good place to get a meal later at night (when the lines have died down). I really like some of their menu choices and while it is noisy, I dont have any problem conversing with the others at my table.
When is it open?
Sunday through Thursday The Cove is open for lunch and dinner from 11:30 in the morning to midnight. On Fridays and Saturdays it stays open until 2 in the morning.
See, you can get that late night meal without much trouble here theres almost never a line after about 9 or 10 in the evening.
What can I eat?
One thing I like about the menu at The Cove is the fact that it takes a little bit of cuisine from each of the three restaurants behind it. There are some steak dishes, some Italian dishes and some Chinese dishes. They also mix up the appetizers and the desserts in the same way. In addition there are more classic pub style sandwiches and meals.
For the appetizer I almost always go with an order of the sliders, which are little mini-burgers. You get four of them and they are perfect when youve got a table full of people. My partner usually gets the shrimp cocktail you can order as many shrimp as youd like (for a price of course). There are other appetizers including items from the raw bar (not my cup of tea) and things like chicken fingers and cheesy garlic bread. If youre not really in the appetizer kind of mood, there are all different soup and salad choices.
For the meals theres a whole lot to choose from. My partner often gets the steak and cheese panini while I usually go for the NY Strip Steak. They also have a good turkey dish and a tasty Rueben.
The portion sizes are all really good we almost never are able to finish what weve ordered, especially since we want to save some room for dessert.
The desserts are all pretty good and include tiramisu, cheesecake and different kinds of ice cream, sorbets and gelatos. We almost always end up getting something, even if we just share it. Of course weve got to have a cup of coffee to close out our meal!
Prices
Like everything at Mohegan Sun, The Cove isnt cheap. However in the whole scheme of Mohegan prices, its fairly reasonable. Expect to spend around $15 to $20 per person for a meal if you dont go overboard on appetizers, desserts of alcohol, all of which quickly push the price up. The appetizers average around $10, the sandwiches slightly more than that and then entrees are around $15 to $20. Desserts are around $6 or so.
The Cove does accept points from the Mohegan Sun Players Club, so if you have built up enough points, you can use it to pay for your dinner.
Final Thoughts
While its not my favorite restaurant at Mohegan Sun, I definitely do like The Cove. I like the way its combined some of the cuisine from what are my favorite restaurants (Pompeii & Caesar and the Bamboo House specifically) with its more traditional pub menu. It gives you a chance to taste a bit from all around the world. Not only that the food is almost universally quite good and the service, while not outstanding in any sense of the word, is at least average and is good enough that you shouldnt have a bad experience.
While I wouldnt wait for hours to sit here like some do at lunch or dinnertime, I dont have any problem going to The Cove later in the evening when I can be seated right away. Ive always enjoyed my meal and havent had any problems.
