related points of uniqueness (Reply to this comment)

Excellent, detailed review - i was curious why you'd picked the Crane Wife as your #1 album of the year, and you make an interesting case. My enthusiasm for Crane Wife is moderate (Picaresque and Her Majesty are much more vivid albums to me, so far), and i appreciate the perspective of a convert. It gives me things i will listen for ... although your simple, direct telling of the Crane Wife myth is affecting to me in a way that trying (and failing) to figure out Meloy's three songs on the topic was not.
As far as "unique" - well, of course, but given the sad comments i've seen you make about being unable to even make year-end Top Tens, i want to let you know that probably no combination of skills is as unprecedented as you might think. Other excellent bands that combine literary, allusive storytelling with a wide array of non-rock textures include Fiery Furnaces, the Rheostatics, Squonk Opera, and Maestro Subgum & the Whole, as well as solo artist Laurie Anderson. You should absolutely check them out. (Recommended starting points: Blueberry Boat, Introducing Happiness, You are Here, Lost Lost Lost, and Strange Angels, respectively, at least to my tastes.)
Literary, allusive, many-textured, but emotional/analytical rather than storytelling: the Loud Family. Storytelling, many-instrument-using, but not quite literary: Sufjan Stevens.
cheers,
- Brian

Good review, but I hold that no one will be listening to this four-chord mish-mash in a few years.
But that's just me.
Again, good review.

Awesome review. I've heard Picaresque and liked it to a certain degree so I might have to give this one a shot. I have to say your review sparked quite a bit of curiosity in a good way.
God Bless,

Amusing, but you've got your dates and names mixed up :P
Decembrist revolution. Missing an 'e'. Plus Dostoevsky would have been about four at the time. But I won't hold it against you, on account of I'm a comment wh*re.
