I wish that too! (Of course, you haven't been that prolific yourself lately.)
Thanks. Hope your holidays have been nice also.

Always happy to put a book in someone's hands. But unless you REALLY loved this series, I'd go ahead and wait the five or however many years it'll be for the final volume.

It had somehow escaped my notice that Card had put this out... I read almost everything of his that I could get my hands on in the late 80s and early 90s, but somewhere along the line I quit keeping track.
I'll have to pull out my old Alvin Maker books, spend some time getting reacquainted, and then get my hands on this one.
Hrmph... my 'to be read' list grows by 6 in one fell swoop.

I think you've a fair evaluation. The series has been in neutral for quite a while, suddenly things all start to fall into place all too easily and before you know it we're set up for the climax in the next book.
There is still hope. Farland may have driven the nail in the Runelords coffin, but Card will get at least one more chance to make good on Alvin Maker. But for him to live up to the original potential of the series he may have to write the best novel of his career.

I agree with your assessment of the series...the first few books were as excellent as "Ender's Game", while the latter few became meandering and rather pointless.
That said, I found this return to direction jarring. It felt as though Card had suddenly realized "I've been talking about this damn Crystal City for 5 books and about 30 years of Alvin's life without doing a single thing about it" and then decided to just build the whole thing in as little space as possible. The book seemed rushed, and I HATE it when authors try to tie all their plot threads together in as little time as possible, especially in epic-length works (which is why I really liked the ending of the Hollywood "Return of the King" and disliked the conclusion to David Farland's "Runelords"). Then again, I assumed that this was the end of the series. I'm glad to hear that there's another one coming.
A great review with some excellent points.

Thanks. It may not be lean-n-mean, but I'm just happy to put something out there. It's been quite a while it seems.
I think I tend to write longer reviews for sequels and books in series. Perhaps because I feel like I'm writing for those who've already read the first book I feel like I can get into more nitty-gritty.
Thanks for reading.

..
Having just read the earlier review by treeseed it is apparent that this
book can not be discussed in few words.
Which is about as deep as my analysis might go.
Very nicely done.
