ultrahi's Full Review: Michael E. Gerber - The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most...
The E Myth Revisited is one of Gerber's many classic books to help small business owners develop a successful entrepreneurial mindset. In it, Gerber puts forward his beliefs on why most small businesses don't work, and his approach on how to turn that around to be highly successful. It's a fascinating read, and although it certainly won't answer every small start-up business question it will get you thinking about things differently.
The book follows the discussion between Gerber and 'Sarah', the owner of a small start-up business that is eating up her life and leaving her unhappy and over-worked. In this discussion Gerber helps Sarah re-kindle the entrepreneurial spirit that is within her, and encourages her to create templates for business somewhat in the manner of McDonalds franchises - which Gerber believes is the most successful business model. After explaining this belief Gerber goes on to break down the core activities any small business owner should do so that they can work on the business rather than on doing the work - the most common failings of a new business owner.
Gerber's writing is inspirational and encouraging, and there's a lot in there to take in and apply to your own life, not just your business. The one down point for me was when Gerber idolizes McDonalds as the 'perfect' business model - franchising does not sound like the answer to all business woes - but he brought me back around as he shows how that works in practice with specific activities to do. As I was recently involved in an unsuccessful small start-up perhaps I should have read this before we started rather than afterwards, but it's still been illuminating and I can see how his model should have been applied to keep us more aligned and focussed. Ah, the benefit of hindsight. I've also seen his methods in action at another more successful company I worked where there was a comprehensive, but flexible, work methods manual in place that all new starters are given on their first day at work. Helpful indeed.
The methods in this book will not make your business successful, only you can do that, but they will make you think about what you're doing and how to do it better. A must read for any small business owner or someone thinking about making their own entrepreneurial leap.
In a new and totally revised edition of his groundbreaking bestseller The E-Myth, Gerber completely revolutionizes the idea of starting, growing, and ...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
