Dean Koontz is a master storyteller of the supernatural and bizarre. With that thought in mind I stepped into the world of The Face. What I found upon crossing the threshold of the first page and voyaging across the sea of words did not disappoint me.
With the standard emotionally crippled hero, spunky kid, evil villain and the supernatural, Koontz took me on a journey that I had yet to experience from him.
In twists and turns, I found that the alive were dead then alive again. The dead stayed dead, but appeared alive. And no place is safe to hide.
The hero is worried about protecting The Face, one of the greatest actors of all time. While the true intended victim is preparing for the fight of his life, his only help a dead man and his hints of what is to come.
The villain is a true evil, not worried about anything but creating chaos on such a scale that all of mankind will feel unsafe. His past time is performing small scale deeds that corrupt and confuse, until his one true purpose can be realized.
The main characters are well thought out, if somewhat lacking in substance. Everything is centered around the main plot with little deviation into their lives other than as it pertains to the storyline. The one I got to know best is the one that I hoped to see fail, the villain. I was given a glimpse as to why he had become the man he was. None of what I read gave me an ounce of sympathy for him, though.
There are two strong secondary characters that carry most of the humor, such as it is, in The Face. It's not often that a second player is one of my favorite people. Koontz has achieved one of those rare, special characters with his humorous, "damn the consequences" homicide detective.
Overall, this book kept me turning pages and looking forward to what was going to happen next. In the beginning The Face threw curves at me that I didn't see coming, slowly losing steam as I got further into it and was able to predict what was going to happen. It didn't detract from my enjoyment...I still wanted to finish the book without putting it down. The Face is another solid book from Koontz that I would recommend to anyone.
