Pros: Portable. Converts into a booster seat. Inexpensive. Lightweight.
Cons: Needs re-designing. Can be DANGEROUS!
The Bottom Line: I recommend a portable highchair to anybody who feeds his, or her baby outside the home. Although, the Portable 3-in-1 Booster Seat by The First Years is not it!

Do you have a baby? Well, then you know that a highchair will be in your future. Did you know that a portable highchair could be just as useful as the main highchair in your home? If you already know that, than youre one step ahead of me. I didnt realize it until we took a long weekend away when our son was 7-months old. By then, he was adept at eating in the big-boy highchair, so feeding him in his car seat was problematic, to say the least. I wont go into the messy details, suffice to say, the following week I picked up the Portable 3-in-1 Booster Seat by The First Years.
Pros
Initially, I was pleased with the seat. Its easy to clean, and to maintain. Theres a lip around the edge of the tray so spills can be mopped up before baby hands start splattering liquids everywhere. Food gets caught between the crevices a bit more than in the main highchair, but thats due to its design for portable use. Its collapsible, and can be completely disassembled for dishwashing, or for a suitcase. To clean, I found warm water and a cloth usually do the trick, but a garden hose works well for big messes. Ive run the seat through the dishwasher for deep cleaning. It takes up the entire bottom rack of the dishwasher, thus its not apart of my cleaning regimen. Smaller dishwashers such as those found in apartments may not house the entire seat in one cleaning. It comes out looking like new, but water can become trapped in the hollow forms. Just squeeze it out... its not a major concern.
The gold tray masks stains, and the chair is dark in color, as a result, our seat looks fresh after 3-years of use. The assembly is straightforward, that is, once you master the octopus-like belts. The belts are color-coded, so its not confusing, its just strappy. The safety straps are white, while the restraints are blue. One straps goes around the back of the chair, while the other goes underneath the chair. The restraints go over the waist and through the crotch like a T-support. Once fastened, the seat is quite safe and secure. The booster fastened to EVERY full-sized chair that Ive encountered, which is many.
The Portable 3-in-1 Booster Seat is convenient for travel, when eating out, and when eating in baby-less homes. It collapses easily. All you do is remove the tray, fold the back down, and fasten the belts. In addition, a handle is included for convenient carrying. It measures 14 x 14 x 7 when collapsed, which is small enough to fit in most stroller baskets. This seat has outlived the main highchair in our home. It resided in my car for about a year and a half; therefore, it was always on hand. Why the 3-star rating then?
Cons
When my son was 10-months old, he pushed the tray off with his feet. The seat was strapped onto one of my kitchen chairs, and my son was strapped into the seat. The force of my son kicking the tray off caused the chair, and my son to fall forward. He fell flat on his face because the tray was no longer there to protect him. Fortunately, the chair was sitting on carpet, so the fall did not harm him. It did terrify both of us though, so I put the seat away. Subsequently, the seat was ONLY used when I could sit on the floor and face my son. Clearly, this wasnt convenient for eating out, thus, we retired the tray, and the portable highchair became the portable booster seat. If a 10-month old has the strength to push the tray off the seat, then its poorly designed.
When William grew out of the big-boy highchair, the portable booster became the full-time seat in our home. In fact, hes still using the booster. Although, not for long, as hes nearly hit the maximum weight limit of 40-pounds. Actually, I would be surprised if the average 35-pound child were able to use this booster seat at all. Its not exactly generous in the hinny area. My sons inherited his fathers stature, 6 7 tall, so no matter how much he eats, hes still a slender boy. I wish the straps were longer too. Now that Wills 3-years old, the straps are close fitting. In truth, the seat doesnt appear to be very comfortable either. Its made of hard plastic; therefore, its not something Id be eager to sit on. My sons never complained
thats my presumption though.
Description:
The Portable 3-in-1 Booster Seat is intended to be a multi-functional piece of baby equipment. The First Years purports it to be a portable highchair, a booster seat, and a play chair for the floor. We never used it in this mode, so I cant comment on that, although, when used on the floor, remove the straps to avoid risk of strangulation. Designed with both sexes in mind, the chair is available in 2-color ways:
● Primary ~ red, blue, and golden yellow (this is the one we have)
● Ocean ~ blue, teal, and white
The seat is made of hard plastic, while the tray is made of a softer more pliable plastic. The straps and the safety restraints are made of nylon. Following is a list of features, and items that are included with this model.
● Lightweight ~ approximately 4 pounds
● Adjustable seat height ~ 3 positions
● Adjustable tray ~ 3 positions
● Removable tray
● Two-hand side release tray
● Color coded waist & crotch restraints
● 2-safety straps
● Collapsible
● Easy to carry handle
● Completely disassembles for dishwasher
Assembly:
Wash with mild soap and water before use. The Portable 3-in-1 Booster Seat is comprised of 9-separate pieces: the back, the seat, 2-sides, the tray, waist & crotch restraints, and 2-safety straps. The Owners Guide is comprehensive, and it includes written instructions as well as line drawings. Also, the components of the seat are labeled, and raised symbols indicate proper positioning. It took me less than 10-minutes to assemble the seat, and to secure it to the chair. Its not difficult to assemble, but its slightly confusing to thread the straps correctly so that they fasten face up rather than the opposite. Those with fingernails be forewarned ~ you may break one, or two.
Closing Remarks:
We travel frequently; in addition, we often visit family and friends that do not have little ones, thus for us a portable highchair was essential. I recommend one to anyone who feeds his, or her child outside of the home. That said, I think this seat is better left on the shelf. I cannot recommend the portable highchair feature of the seat; however, if youre looking for a booster seat for the table, then it meets the requirements. I cautiously recommend the Portable 3-in-1 Booster Seat.
As far as comparison-shopping goes, keep in mind the Portable 3-in-1 Booster Seat does not include the following:
● No seat recline
● No seat pad
● No compartments on tray
● No featured toys
WARNING:
● NEVER leave child unattended while in seat
● NEVER use without safety restraints fastened between crotch & waist
● Designed for chairs with backs ONLY. DO NOT use on stool.
