| jdhauer's Full Review: The First Years Car Sun Shade 2 Pack |
It's hard when you're traveling with a small child. We had a stroller, a car seat, a diaper bag, clothes, wipes, burp rags and so on and so forth. I really missed my carefree days sans baby when I could toss everything I needed for two weeks into one small carryon as I felt like a veritable pack horse!
Whenever we travel to see my in-laws out in southern Arizona, the two things I always pack are sunscreen and two 2 packs of The First Years Car Sun Shades.
While you might think it's a bit ridiculous to pack a car sun shade, these particular sun shades are a breeze to toss into a suitcase. In fact, I normally keep them in an outside pocket and never unpack them after we return home.
Folded, these nifty shades are about a quarter of an inch thick in the shape of an index card. Unfolded, they expand to about a square foot and are merely thin pieces of tinted plastic static cling film.
To apply these to your car, the first thing you need to figure out is where you'd like them. I don't like to play games trying to figure out which direction the sun is coming into the car from which is why I bring two 2 packs with me. I like to place one on the interior of each rear side window and one on each side of the interior of the rear windshield.
While I believe these car shades would work on the exterior surfaces, they might fly off when the vehicle is in motion. If you apply these to your car windows, please do not attempt to lower the windows that have the shades affixed or they might peel off inside your door assembly when you raise the window.
To actually affix the shade, unfold the shade and stick it to the glass surface. You do not need to wet the shade or the window. I usually start on one end and press the air bubbles out as I work my way to the opposite end. If air bubbles don't matter to you, just stick the shade to the window. I'm not particular about the way the shades look when affixed because they are coming off when it's time to leave in a week or two. I might be bothered by the air bubbles if I used these shades on a daily basis.
To remove the shades, simply peel them off. You can easily fold them up and re-use them over and over again. The shades do not leave a residue of any type on your car windows.
The First Years Car Shades work fairly well at reducing the sun glare that shines right in a child's face through car windows. You won't get UV protection but it'll be a more comfortable ride for your little one. I have not encountered any vision distortion or problems as a driver when looking through the shades.
Considering the very low price for these shades (about $3 for a two pack), it's not an expensive product to try for yourself. I've tried the various roller shades on the market and they just don't measure up at all. The First Years Car Sun Shades work. They stay affixed to the windows. They don't distort or block vision. They keep my daughter happy during long rides through the desert with the sun at high noon. I couldn't ask for a better product.
