lovetodraw's Full Review: The First Years: Massaging Action Teether
Wow! As a mother of five, I'd thought I'd seen everything on the market for a teething baby, that was until my son brought home The First Years Massaging Action Teether for his 5 month old son, Tyler. What a great idea I thought, a teether that actually vibrates and massages your baby's gums. Then we actually put the teether to the test and handed it to Tyler.
The First Years Massaging Action Teether is a baby teether that looks sort of like a magic wand to me. It measures 5 1/2 inches tall and is three inches wide at the top and 2 inches wide on the bottom. The bottom base is made of a hard plastic and has a handle which is supposed to be very easy for your baby to grasp. On top of the base is a soft, chewable, plastic star that vibrates when your child bites down on any of the three top points of the star. Each of these star points has a different textured design on it. One has three thin raised lines, one has six raised dots and the third has three thick raised lines. I suppose these are supposed to give your baby a different sensation when he/she bites down on them. Tyler's teether has a dark blue base and a bright green star. Sounds pretty neat, huh? Well, I thought so, until I watched Tyler with it.
The first problem I have with the teether is that it is too heavy for Tyler to hold for any length of time. He would manage, with both hands, to get it to his mouth, but couldn't seem to keep it there. To make it even more difficult the handle is too thick for Tyler to grasp securely. He tried really hard mind you, because at his age everything must go in his mouth!
The other problem I have with the teether is that the batteries cannot be changed. However the package does state that the batteries are guaranteed for four months from the date of purchase. If they fail before that time you can send the teether along with proof of purchase, back to the company and they will refund your purchase price and any shipping charges you have incurred. With a guarantee like that, I guess I can deal with the battery situation!
Ok, so how does Tyler like his new teether? As long as he can get it in his mouth he loves it. I thought he might be scared of the vibrations, but he actually seems to enjoy it! At five months old he does bite down hard enough to activate it too! Now my fingers are saved!
Overall I think The First Years Massaging Teether is an excellent idea. The vibrations do help soothe Tyler's poor teething gums, which makes for a much happier baby. Now if The First Years would just make the handle a little bit thinner and somehow make it a tad lighter it would be perfect!
