| ctinhan's Full Review: The First Years Soft-Bite Spoons |
When my daughter was ready to begin her first foods I knew I couldn't use our everyday flatware, for this reason I went on a search to find some spoons that would serve my daughter well. After some deliberation at the store, I decided on The First Years Soft Spoons.
These spoons have stainless steel handles and a nice soft covering on the part that goes in the baby's mouth. Babies tend to bite down on utensils when they are first learning to eat and the covering on these spoons will not hurt your baby's gums as they do. On regular flatware the edges of the spoon can be sharp to your baby's tender gums.
My daughter bit down on these spoons many times and she never damaged the covering. I would examine the spoons before and after each feeding to see if there was any tearing or bite marks that could potentially be a problem and never found there to be any.
The First Years Soft Bite Spoon is the perfect size for a baby, small to fit inside their mouths. The smaller spoon is also perfect for getting every bit of contents out of a baby food jar.
The First Years spoons are very inexpensive. They are available in four packs for around four dollars. The spoons come with either colored or white coverings, depending on your preference. I used both and preferred the colored over the white. The main reason is because I found that the white covering became stained from some of the jar foods like carrots or sweet potatoes. The staining that took place made the spoons look dirty even when they were clean. I ended up tossing the white covered spoons in the garbage after I realized the discoloration would not come out. From then on, I stuck with the colored spoons and was not disappointed with them.
These spoons were also ideal for my daughter to use later on when she began to feed herself. They are lightweight and easy to maneuver for a child who is learning to feed themselves. The tapered handle was very easy for my daughter to grasp and the smaller spoon was just the right size for the amount of food my daughter could get to her mouth.
With the exception of the white covered spoons, clean up of the spoons was very easy. These spoons cleaned up very nicely with a mild detergent and water. They are also dishwasher safe but I do not have a dishwasher, so I can't vouch for this aspect.
Overall, these spoons are a great addition for any baby learning to eat and I am sure I will be buying these again when the time comes for feeding our next child.
