throwbackmama's Full Review: The First Years Soft Trainer Seat
*Warning* This review has several mentions of bodily functions and their odors, as is necessary for a review of the is nature. Not for the uninitiated!
I finished potty training the second of my three boys a few weeks ago. Throughout our potty training journey we have used a variety of portable potties, seats, videos etc. This seat has been the most successful for my second son.
This seat has a cushioned seat that is air filled. It hooks on to a brightly colored frame with handles that then sits on the main toilet seat.
Your child will most definately need a footstool or a a lift from mom or dad to get onto the seat. I personally recommend a footstool, as half of the aim (no pun intended) of potty training is fostering independence. The frame of the seat helps deflect any mis-aimed streams from escaping out of the gap between the seat and the toilet--which is a plus for little boys!
The handles on the side are fairly silly--my son never used them for holding on while on the seat--and it just made it easier to fling it across the room. Eeeeeeeeewwwwwww gross!
I must also say--that once our weather turned warmer this past week or so, I noticed a fairly unpleasant odor eminating from the kids' bathroom. Upon lifting the seat up off of the toilet I realized what it was. Urine was trapped in between the two pieces of the seat, and between the seat and the toilet seat. Not really a pleasant thing to have sitting around in your bathroom. So I suppose it really needs to be taken apart and cleaned in warm soapy water daily. But it sure beats dumping poop out of a portable potty chair.
We do really like this seat, and I must admit that we own two--one travels with us in the canvas "potty bag" so that we do not have to deal with a three year old's "potty phobia" while on the road.
Bottom line (again--no pun intended) is that this is the best seat that I have used thus far in our potty training career. I still have at least one child to potty train yet, and I would love if in the meantime there could be a one piece seat developed that is just as cushy and as good at deflecting, but which does not have the same "odor issues" as this seat!
