goldjay's Full Review: The First Years Take and Toss Cups Cars
I have been using the same Playtex sippy cups for a long time. When my daughter was little (she's almost 10 now), they did not have these cool "disposable" cups that they have now and I was always quite upset when I lost one of these more expensive Playtex cups. I had a tendency to leave them at restaurants or friends houses and at almost $5 per cup, this set me back each time. I was having the same problem with my 3 year old son until I discovered the Take And Toss lines. I had experimented with this brand before and I have to say that I am even happier this time around.
Description These are 10 ounce cups that are see-through. You can see how much liquid you have poured inside the cup and how much is left after your child has had a drink from it. The cups I have all have pictures from the movie Cars on them, which is something that my son really likes. In addition, each cup has a sippy top lid, either blue or red. The tops have the sippy spout which is easy to drink from and also spill-proof. There are no valves in these cups which is a plus and a minus, but I'll get to that in a minute.
What we like I like that these cups are inexpensive. I paid $3.50 for a set of 6 cups. The cups that I use most frequently at home are almost $5 per cup so this is a huge difference. I like that if I lose one, it is not such a huge deal but still I can wash and re-use them also.
I like that these cups are lightweight and easy for my pre-schooler to hold in one hand. They hold a full 10 ounces of liquid (I measured) so he gets a good sized drink without going overboard. When I used cups similar to these in the past, I had a really hard time snapping the lids on tight so that they stayed on. With these cups, I find that the lid snaps on easily and it is always tight. I have never had one pop off, even when the cup has been thrown on the floor.
The fact that these cups do not have valves in them makes them easy to clean. There is also one less piece to keep track of so the cup is very functional. (I can't tell you how many of the Playtex valves have been lost over the years!)
What could be better As I said, the fact that these cups do not have valves is also a negative aspect. The reason I say this is that the valves in the more expensive sippy cups usually help them to not leak. These cups are actually pretty good about not leaking overall but still, there are instances where they DO leak. For example, if the cup gets knocked over on the kitchen table, it generally does not leak if picked up within a few minutes. However, if the cup is thrown to the floor (as my son often does in his frustration at not getting his way at mealtimes!), you will often find a small puddle on the floor where the cup has landed. Overall, it is the extreme situations where you have leaks but still it needs to be noted, especially if your child is one who tends to throw!
How they hold up These cups are dishwasher safe and this is how I wash them. When I tried these cups in the past, I found that over time, the dishwasher must have melted them just a little because the tops did not seal on as well and there tended to be more leaks over time. These cups have been improved and I do not see that problem at all. I have a few cups that we have had for several months now, that have been washed many times, and they seem to be just as good as when they were new.
When I use these cups most I find that I use these cups most when I am traveling or at friends houses. It is easy to toss one into the diaper bag (or plastic grocery bag as the case often is!) to take with us so that my son has a familiar, mostly spill proof cup to drink from. It is nice at friends houses since I'd hate to have him spill his drinks on their floors (especially the ones who don't have kids already themselves). It also works well in restaurants. The great thing is is that if I am my regular absent-minded self and forget the cup, it's no big deal.
Recommendations I would definitely recommend these cups. Although I do not use them on a daily basis, they certainly come in handy for outings and trips to restaurants. I also use them in the house when all of my "regular" cups are dirty/in the dishwasher since I seem to have less of them than I used to. My son likes them and I find that they come in handy at many times!
