A cute, small hotel

Written: Oct 05 '05 (Updated Oct 06 '05)
Pros:Location, room, service, price
Cons:Far away from the big stuff
The Bottom Line: It is a nice hotel but small. It is far away from everything but close to a subway. Watch out for the full size bed deals.

I booked it through hotels.com and they bought the smallest rooms possible. My trip was booked for two people and hotels.com assured by phone that I would have a queen bed. So, when we got there, the VERY nice lady told us we'd have a full bed. Not a queen. I tried to call hotels.com for some customer service and I was on hold for fifteen minutes before the lady upgraded us for free. (I hope that doesn't get her in trouble because otherwise I'd have to give the Franklin two thumbs down). The room was small but very nice.
The room had a clear flat panel TV with a choice of channels. The room had a nice desk and chair. The bed was very comfortable. Little Red Riding Hood would have said, "Ah, just right." The bed had a chenille blanket on top of the bed spread that added a "home-style" touch. It made for a wonderful napping blanket. The carpet was in great condition and the desk clerk had mentioned the hotel had just been re-carpetted.
There were small touches that made a difference. The bathroom was so, so tiny but it was fine. The toilet was so close to the sink, you had to almost sneak around it to sit down. The bathroom was clean, the shower head was the perfect height to clean my belly button. I managed to keep the rest of me clean. The bathroom didn't really match the style of the room. The bathroom decor was bit institutional rather than going with the warm feel of the room.
There is an old school elevator that was honestly fun to ride on. There is a meager, free breakfast; however, they had a pretty mean cup of coffee ready for me 24 hours a day. In the morning, I believe that had some gourmet selections. The food options weren't appealing to my girlfriend or I, so we'd grab a few pieces of cheese to munch on in the subway. There really wasn't much to the hotel. I think they had a fax machine but there wasn't a business. THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE ROOM! It is a small hotel, I tell you...
The only other thing is you are pretty close to the subway if you need to hitch a ride. Central Park is about three or four long blocks to get there. The Franklin is quite a distance from Times Square. (The hotels.com guy told me that this was a good central location.) There was always a friendly worker in the lobby to give you some NYC advice. There are some drug stores, a Best Buy, and florist (in case you need some roses to get out of trouble like I did) all within walking distance.
