Are you a gay guy who’s tired of all the straight people getting their little books of maxims and not having any for yourself?
Then the The Gay Guys Guide to Life just might be the answer to your problems. Providing 436 “maxims, manners, and mottoes for the Gay Nineties,” The Gay Guys Guide to Life is a humorous look at our lives in a fun and easy to read little pocket book.
There aren’t any chapters in the book, what you get are all 436 of the maxims, several per page and lasting for all 160 pages of the book. You won’t learn anything earth shattering here, but the maxims are fun and are often great to use as an ice-breaker at some sort of social gathering (I used to start each gay-straight alliance meeting in college with a quick little maxim from the book to get people talking).
Some highlights include:
If people dislike you because you’re gay, it’s their problem. Refuse to let them make it yours.
Beware of dates who look in the mirror more than they look at you
Homophobia is fear and ignorance. So educate, don’t attack. But remember, it’s not your job to educate the ineducable.

That’s what you’ll get, and there are 432 more like that to enjoy. Some make you think, others make you laugh, but all have some sort of bearing and relation to our lives. In the end, The Gay Guys Guide to Life is a helpful exercise for each of us to better understand our own lives. Don’t quote me on it, but I’m sure deep down, anyone who reads it, will walk away having learned a thing or two.
So go get yourself a copy (it’s really cheap on the internet I see from Epinions) and start reading some of the gay maxims. The book might have been written in the mid-90’s, but the issues and ideas raised are just as current today as they were almost 10 years ago ((oh my god – the mid-90’s were that long ago). It’s a book that will help you look deeper into yourself and hopefully make you better for it.
Now that I sound like a self-help guru…
Seriously though, The Gay Guy’s Guide to Life is well worth having in your collection and I would be remiss in not recommending it to anyone (though I’d have to keep the recommendation limited to gay men – that’s this book’s audience and others will probably not see as much useful information in it).
