What a Cat Knows
Written: Apr 17 '01 (Updated Apr 19 '01)
Pros:great story, lovely characterization
Cons:dragged in some places.
The Bottom Line: Good book. Great characters, but drags in places.
Gayle Greeno has a good writing style. She is at times a little hard to follow, and this particular story could drag a little bit, but overall this is a very nice book that is quite worth the reading. The story line reminds me quite a bit of the Heralds of Mercedes Lackey, but I find Lackey's writing to be quite the superior.
I love the characterizations in this book. Doyce(main character) and Jernet are wonderful characters that I can identify with. I would have like to know more about Doyce before this book begins. Greeno does a good job in filling in the informational blanks if not quite giving me the emotional concept of an earlier Doyce. I found myself quite emotional attached to the characters at the end of the novel. The Ghatti are also really good cat characters and I have enjoyed them immensely.
The story line is good. In this country, people who are chosen bond with Ghatti, Cats who can mind-speak. These cats cannot lie and can tell when others lie which make their bondmates and themselves great for the role of justice keepers. Someone is killing the "Seekers" as they are called and extracting their brains. The story really starts when Doyce's love, Oriel is killed. She is sent on his last route to scout for clues to his killer. Her route is filled with danger. Along the way she is joined by the aloof Jernet who has his own reasons for such a quest. In the end the danger comes right out of her past and her nightmares.
There are a lot of characters whom we don't ever really know a lot about like Oriel. There are many complications and characters that are introduced in this novel that have a vital role in the next novel. This novel seemed kind of a set up for the next one.
I enjoyed this novel. I would recommend it if you like Mercedes Lackey's Herald series or cat books!
