This was the first DeMille book I read. I was hooked from the beginning. DeMille's writing style completely captures the reader's attention. He writes in such a way that you really feel as if you are right there watching the action. I did not know a thing about the Gold Coast nor did I really know much about the lifestyles of the main characters. After talking with others about the book and asking questions I found that DeMille's depiction was not stereotypical, rather it brings together the epitome of the Mob Boss family and the wealthy WASP family. He develops the families independently and then thrusts them together in a series of plot twists. The interaction between the two families will keep you on the edge of your seat. I also recommend Spencerville, The Charm School and Talbot Oddessy. Capice?
PS for parents: This book does contain several adult situations. They are a little graphic (not pornographic), but may offend those of delicate sensibilities. They help build the complexity of the characters and do not detract from the story. Just a heads up.
