Kittyokc's Full Review: The Goodlife Recipe Wholesome Delights Chicken & B...
Treats for cats are a dime a dozen, there are tons of them out there for you to choose from, but finding the right variety of treats can be difficult. I like to give the cats treats as a special thing and to give them a variety away from their normal dry cat food and occasional wet/moist food. Unfortunately, most of the treats we've seen and tried can fall into what I call the "junk food" category, kind of like chips and cookies are for us humans.
My husband picked up some new treats for the cats to try that he saw advertised and surprisingly both cats like them. The reason I say surprisingly is that while Frisky, our 12 year old cat, will eat just about anything, but we haven't really found a treat that Reva, our 4 year old cat we've had almost a year, would eat. So while we were trying all these treats, Frisky would eat them, but Reva would sniff them and walk away, not so with The Goodlife Recipe Wholesome Delights, she'll actually eat these.
The Goodlife Recipe Wholesome Delights claim they are wholesome treats in perfect balance right on the little 3 oz. pouch. They also claim 6 wholesome ingredients, no artificial preservatives, flavors or fillers. Sounds good for a treat, almost too good, which a quick look at the ingredients proved true. While there are no artificial preservatives, flavors or fillers, there are by-products, ground corn and animal fat. Okay, so they're not perfect and could fall into the "junk food" category I mentioned earlier, but as a once in a while thing they are okay unless you are only into giving your cats only healthy food and treats.
I was surprised once opening the pouch, which is resealable, these treats are small little squares that are lightly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The little squares come in three different colors to represent their flavors, two different shades of brown which are the chicken and beef flavors and a green one to represent the garden green flavor. Another big surprise was the smell, these treats smelled no different than dry cat food, which was a pleasant surprise since most treats tend to have a strong and sometimes unpleasant odor to them.
The big test was the taste test, would the cats actually like them? I opened the pouch and both cats came running, Frisky got to me first as usual. I took about 5 or 6 out of the pouch and gave them to Frisky and he started gobbling them up. He even ate the green ones which I was surprised about since he usually doesn't like many things that are actually good for him. While he was munching his down, I took another 5 or 6 out of the pouch and put them down in front of Reva, she sniffed them a little bit and then ate them all and actually looked at me for more. I gave them each a few more and put the pouch up, now all I have to do is take the pouch out and shake it and they both come running.
While the packaging gives the impression these are healthy treats, those that feed their cats only healthy food would be disappointed in reading the first few ingredients on back of the package. I do agree that by-products are not needed, but the list also does include some good stuff. The first six ingredients listed on the package are - Chicken By-Product Meal, Ground Corn, Animal Fat, Rice, Dried Meat By-Products and Wheat Flour. Most people reading that would think that this is just "junk food" and not good for their cat and while I'm not thrilled with the by-products and animal fat, it does have some better ingredients further on down the list, along with all the vitamins and minerals required. It has natural poultry flavor, dried beef, dried spinach, dried peas, dried carrots and even skim milk powder, so as you see it's not all bad and since we use treats as a special, once in a while thing, I find this to be okay to give them, plus there are a lot worse treats out there ingredient-wise.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this treat for anyone with cats, the small sized treats can even be fed to kittens and even our finicky cat, Reva, likes them, so that has to amount to something since this is the first treat she actually likes. While these may not be the healthiest treats out there, they are better than the average treats that we've tried.
