althaea's Full Review: Lynne Cherry - The Great Kapok Tree
This 30 page book has a great message for us all. The last page of the book is a written plea from the author, Lynne Cherry, to save the rainforest.
A man walks into the rainforest and begins to whack into the Great Kapok Tree. Barely making a dent, he is exhausted. He falls asleep at the base of the tree. Many animals, including a snake, a bee, monkeys, a toucan, a macaw, among others, come down to whisper to this man. They each make there plea for him not to cut down this tree. This is there home, this is where the cougar gets his prey, this tree provides the oxygen that allows us all to live. They see what happens when a tree is cut down, more get cut down, than the brush is set on fire.
To take an excerpt from the book.
The unstriped anteater said to the man: "Senhor, you are chopping down this tree with no thought for the future. And surely you know that what happens tomorrow depends upon what happens today. The big man tells you to chop down a beautiful tree. He does not think of his own children, who tomorrow must live in a world without trees."
Finally a child from the Yanomamo tribe makes his plea asking that when this man wakes, he wakes to them all with new eyes. When the man awakes, he sees all the animals and the little boy. He picks up his ax to begin chopping again, stops, puts his ax down and walks away, out of the forest.
I really enjoyed this book. The colored-pencil and watercolor drawings are exceptional with a lot of exotic animals. They are realistic. There is short text on every other page within a box(within the picture) which makes it very easy to read. There was no trying to figure out a word in black on a dark background.
The first couple of pages and the last couple of pages has a map of the rainforests. In the letter to the readers, the author reminds us (since the focus is mostly on the tropical) that we have a temperate rainforest running across the top of the United States in the Pacific Northeast. (This is close to my heart as most of my Rainforest benefits have been for this region.)
