TommyGrrlX's Full Review: Harry Turtledove - The Guns of the South: A Novel ...
Harry Turtledove was an unknown to me until I read this book. Since then, he is now one of my favorite authors. Why? Because of the intricacy of this book. The minute detail he put into it must have taken years.
In "Guns of The South," he turned the tables on the end of the war. What if they south won? We find out... He makes everything seem so real that I was left wondering if something like that could really happen.
He writes so intricately that you are drawn into the web of the characters. You find yourself anxious, worried, excited about the happenings of the book. There are so many angles to this story that you have to take it slowly and read thoroughly, which is not usually easy for me.
I haven't read any other books about alternate history, but the only book I can compare this stories interwoven plot to is "Gone With The Wind," another classic Civil War book.
One thing I like about this book is that at the end, it is finished. No sequels, no part 2's... It's done. You aren't left hanging, you know what happens. I like that. Though the stories don't stop with this book. Harry Turtledove has written other stories, with similar subjects.
Only thing I can think of that I don't like about this book is the length of the chapters, and the depth that they are. You have to stop everything you're doing and read, and read only to keep up with the story. That isn't a bad thing, but it makes reading time longer. Chapters are extremely long in this book, which makes it hard to find a stopping point. But we can deal with this, right?
Starting the story, the South is beaten down, and loosing. Then out of no where, literally, help comes. America Will Break, the Confederate saviors. Times tells loyalty though, and deceptions aren't made the way they wanted them. They become traitors, assassins, turned against the South. It takes many years for them to be contained. The secrets they hold are wondrous, and the things they've brought back in time... Breath taking. But their history books aren't accurate anymore. Where will this lead us...
All in all, a great book, wonderful plot, intricate characters, and perfect use of description.
With the power and assurance of a master storyteller and the scrupulous accuracy of a trained historian, Harry Turtledove has created an immense, meti...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
