Since I'm new at this... (Reply to this comment)

I thank you for showing me how a review should be written.
It's about time someone took the spotlight off the fictional Dracula and introduced the real historical Vlad Tepes to the reading public and especially in a quasi fictional context, since resources do actually exist and are readily available to those interested in only his factual, historical persona.
Based on your review this book goes on my reading list.

Hey, no problem. There's plenty of room in this world for a difference of opinions. :) I can see where you're coming from, too. The narrative did move along at a snail's pace at times. I was interested enough to keep reading, but perhaps some judicious editing might've helped tighten up the plot a little more.
Thanks for commenting! :)

A late response...
Hi!
As an avid reader and fan of vampire mythology in history as well as in both cinema and literature, I found this book to be incredibly boring - lost in it's own verbosity, making a might-have-been interesting narrative into such a snooze that I couldn't force myself to finish it (after pouring through the first 300 pages, or so.) Guess there's no accounting for taste when it is different than our own, huh? I thought your review was quite nicely written- I just disagree.

That's understandable. I'm a fairly patient person when it comes to slow-moving plots and this was well written, but... it could've moved a bit faster in places!

Slow story (Reply to this comment)
by chimericalgirl
You were right about parts of the book being slow. In fact I lost patience with the author a couple of times. It was driving me nuts, get to the point already!
Overall, it's an ok book, but the editor should've advised her to throw out some parts of the book IMHO :P ..

Hi, I'm C_llin, I already try to fix my review but I guess I can not be as good as you did.
You're review is very throughly.
But I'll keep on learning.
Thank you so much.
Sincerely,

I've had this one on my shelf for quite some time now. Your solid review is prodding me on to pull the darn thing out and get it read at long last. I'm looking forward to it. Thanks very much.

Re: Great review... (Reply to this comment)

Hehe, good luck. I kept at it mainly because I love the subject of vampires and to see where it would all lead, but I can see why the book might lose quite a bit of its audience. The snail's crawl pacing can get a little aggravating at times, because you just want SOMETHING to happen.

Great review... (Reply to this comment)

I have a hardcover copy of this book thanks to my mother who buys everything in hardcover and then gives it to me (I have a home library, she doesn't). She said it was good, but because of the problems you mentioned I couldn't get past the first 50 pages or so. I guess I'll have to poke at it again...

It didn't seem odd to me, but then, I spend a rather inordinate amount of time talking about food myself. :-}

Did you find it at all (Reply to this comment)

odd that the author spent so much time talking about their meals in detail? I mean, I honestly thought the book came from a male perspective, the way she went on about every meal. I've been all over Europe and I never had any meals like that!
I appreciate your review. I completely agree that this novel was very slow paced. I took forever reading it, but I loved it all the same.

Re: INTRIGUING... (Reply to this comment)

Thanks. :) I haven't read that book on Dracula, but it sounds intriguing, and I think I've read something else by Florescu, I believe it was In Search of Dracula : The History of Dracula and Vampires. It was a while ago, and IIRC, I did find that a little on the dry side as well.
The scholarship done on Dracula, the legend and Vlad the Impaler has interested me since I was a kid, so a book like The Historian is a natural read. I might have to go back and reread the Florescu book now.
Thanks for commenting! :)

INTRIGUING... (Reply to this comment)
by lammet
This is the second review I read that praises 'The Historian'. Obviously this is a book not to miss. What your review accomplishes, however, is to intrigue the reader. It even motivates me to finish 'Dracula, Prince of many faces' by R.R. Florescu and R.T. McNally; I had put that aside for being too stiff and old (it even speaks of the 'Peoples' Republic of Rumania', the 'Soviet Union' and 'Yugoslavia'!) but my interest in Vlad the impaler has been rekindled by your fine review.
