Pros: I thought the hobbit was a good book for a gr 9 english class.
Cons: It was a little long.
The Bottom Line: I would defeinetly recommend it to anyone who loves fantasy. Just make sure you have a high understandance level because some parts are a little congusing.
The Hobbit is a high fantasy novel with many characters that are very well developed. We can relate to many of the characters with their feelings and attitudes. An example of that would be when the dragon Smaug is killed and Thorin regains his treasure he demonstrates signs of greed in not wanting to give it up or share with the people of Lake-town and Bard.
Characters
Bilbo: He is a young little hobbit who is used to the comforts of his own home, such as tea and homemade cakes. The hobbit also has the luxury of never having to worry about where his next meal is going to come from or getting it taken away from him. Bilbo is used to having a warm bed to sleep in. As the story goes on Bilbo realizes that life isnt just tea and cookies. He began an innocent animal with no life experience, just an odd Tookish side wanting to explode and live life, to an animal that has the respect of others and does not just cherish his well-being but that of others. Also, Bilbo realizes just how good he had it at home and that for most people in life to have a happy life you have to work hard.
Thorin: Thorin is the leader of the dwarves; he is the descendant of Thrain and Thror. He has a rough personality and is somewhat greedy when it comes to the treasure of his ancestors. With Thorin you must earn his respect by proving what you are capable of. The unofficial dwarf king is very bossy and likes things to be done his way; he sometimes has trouble realizing that hes not the best at everything.
These are two of the main characters with many of the conflicts during the story. This book contains many different characters, several of which by the time the end of the book rolls around you wont remember half of them.
During this epic journey of courage and bravery, the troop encounters several obstacles in which they must overcome. Such as getting their horses taken by the Goblins, and running into some trolls who were feeling pretty hungry. The group deals with starvation, having to eat cram and having to wait a long time in between meals. They traveled throughout many places: the Misty Mountains, The Mirkwood Forest and the evil dragon Smaug. The Hobbit isnt your average Disney story, it is way more exciting, its a Disney book for the older more sophisticated soul.
*I'm not usually the type for fantasy novels but the Hobbit was a great read. I havn't read the rest of the series or seen The Lord of the Rings but I'm sure they would be a great read or watch.
