| mancalledlarry's Full Review: The Incredible Head Power Showerhead |
Yes, a TERRIBLE shower head! No, not the incredible shower head, I'm talking about the one that is used BEFORE the incredible shower head is installed. Let me explain.
about 18 years ago or so (give or take a couple years... gimme a break it's been a long time) I saw one of these shower heads featured at a home show in Toronto. I picked one up because of the promised savings in water and heating bills to heat the water. Wow. I can't believe the results. These puppies are succinctly named. I fell in love with it instantly. The water flow was nice and even, and you can stand in the stream for hours it seems. I wonder if it even slows down the flow enough for my hot water tank to heat the water faster than it can be used now? Anyway I've since moved and that head stayed with the house. I silently lamented to myself that I wished they were available in stores. Then I was visiting my fiance's place (1600 miles away... but that's a whole 'nuther story) and she lives in an apartment with a small water heater which only supports one brief shower at a time. She and her son had to alternate when they had showers... one in the morning, and the other would have to have theirs the night before. While we were walking through Lowes looking shopping for other stuff, I glanced down and saw a rack container full of these shower heads for $5.95. I was ecstatic and picked up 2 for her on the spot without even asking her. We got home and installed them. The next morning all 3 of us took showers without running out of hot water!!! (Ahem... and yes... for the record... they were separate showers - we're not married yet.) Anyway, since I got back from that visit, I found them in stores in my area as well (Home Depot carries them here) and I've installed one in my own apartment. There are 2 types available. One is a straight shower head, the other is the head plus a shut off valve (navy valve). That option enables you to rinse yourself wet, then shut off the water at the head while you suds up and then turn it back on so you can rinse off again. The feature works well but because of convection currents in the water lines, if you wait very long with the valve off, the hotter water in the pipes will rise to the head and come out first for a few seconds. Just be careful when you turn it back on as it may be a little hotter until the mixture is rebalanced. This allows you to practically support a whole camp of people showering using that method, without ever running out of hot water. Oh and the valve doesn't perfectly stop the water, it will drip or sputter when it is in the off position, but that's ok because it is only used while the shower is running. (You're not afraid to get wet when you're having a shower are you?) I am now a long time fan and voluntary ambassador for these little wonders. I preach the gospel of these things to anyone that will listen. They really do live up to their name! I would love to see more advertising for them and we should make them mandatory for all government and commercial showers (like provincial or national parks, or Gyms etc.)
