| drew2too's Full Review: The Jekyll and Hyde Club |
While on our first ever visit to the city (on business)I surprised my wife with a visit to the Jekyll & Hyde Club. She loves Halloween, so I thought she'd like it. We went on a Sunday evening in June, when the city was fairly crowded, but we had practically no wait at all. After a nice introductory scene played out near the front entrance, we found ourselves inside the rather dark (but it's supposed to be!) restaurant. We were told to go up to the third floor and would be seated right away. It wasn't right away, but no more than 5 minutes. Our waiter brought out several souvenir glasses and asked if we'd ever been there before. He ran through the menu and some other things, and told us that after we ordered, we were welcome to roam the other floors of the restaurant to look around.
One unique part of the restaurant is the fact that there is an open area that extends from the lower level all the way to the top. If you are seated on an upper floor but near this opening (as we were), you can actually open up the glass "window" and peer down to see the 'show' or other activity going on. There are skeletons galore throughout the club, and instead of talking animals, there are talking skulls on the walls. There are also video monitors throughout to provide even more entertainment. A lively place for everyone including kids (there are video games in different places on each floor). The 'mad scientist' and his assistant made their way through the restaurant, and were eager to be included in a picture if you desired.
The selections on the menu were somewhat limited, and the prices were reasonable (for NY city). Steaks were in the low to mid $20s, burgers and sandwiches were in the teens. My wife had baby back ribs (2 nice-sized portions) topped with fried onion rings, served with coleslaw (very good if you like it creamy) and waffle fries for $21.95. I chose the 1/2 chicken, which came w/wasabi mashed potatoes and veggies for $18.95.
The desert menu was even more limited. We chose a hot fudge sundae. It arrived in a glass, but did not have the cherry or nuts as advertised.
My wife also wanted a souvenir glass, and had it filled with milk. I ordered a coffee. I asked for a refill on the coffee while we shared our dessert (and later discovered that they charge you for each cup of coffee - $1.25). Speaking of sharing, you can share an entree for a $5 charge. Adding a salad to your entree costs $5.95
Our waiter could have appeared more often than he did - maybe he was covering more tables than usual? The service overall was moderate at best.
Picture-taking is allowed, except for the 'shows' (they announce a reminder before the show starts). There is also a souvenir stand on the way out for T-shirts, etc. We didn't get anything there. Near the souvenir counter is an ATM machine, which is helpful - they do NOT accept VISA or MasterCard - only AmEx, traveler's checks or cash. Our visit cost us $72 plus the tip.
