The biggest problem with world music... (Reply to this comment)
by Karen_Olsen
I do actually like this album, but your criticism of the commercializing tendency is quite valid. I've never seen anything by Mursal EXCEPT "The Journey" in Seattle, but I suspect that if I heard the earlier one, I would prefer it, judging by your comments. I do have a Somali friend who knows Mursal personally, so maybe he can refer me to where I can find "New Dawn" or at least a website where I can sample some of the tracks. Thanks for writing--

I don't think the producers are necessarily to blame... (Reply to this comment)

Often the artists, themselves, want a more Western sound. Artists find that when they are labeled as "third world", "traditional", or referred to by their own country, their opportunities become limited. I've heard Angelique Kidjo say in an interview that she doesn't want to be an "Afro-pop" musician, but rather just a "pop" musician. I think a musician can be both - and we can judge their work on both planes.

Don't you hate it when someone rates a good review NR without leaving their name or a comment. It makes me feel that it is a person trying to get me back for giving them a low rating.
