bairdmusic's Full Review: Audrey Penn - The Kissing Hand
When I first left for college, I was scared! It was a big world and I hadn't even touched the experience of it! As, I moved in my new apartment and bid farewell to my family, it hit me that I was all alone. I was an adult and was in charge of taking care of myself. I didn't have my mom there to wash my clothes, tell me to get up for school or tell me to clean my room. To say the least, I was distraught. I calmed my tears down and began to put my bed together. When I whipped my bedspread in the air and single book went flying out with it.
"The Kissing Hand" was what the cover read. "I've never read this book", I thought; as I sat down to read it. On the inside cover of the page, my mom had written a sentimental note of strength, courage and virtue. When I read the book, hot tears filled my eyes and began to fall upon the page. The sweet story of a Mother Raccoon and her child was captivating.
What child isn't scared of their first day of school? Chester, the baby raccoon, is frightened to go to school and leave his mother, Mrs. Raccoon. With his mother being faithful and caring, he tackles the obstacle of school through, the kissing hand. His mother expresses her love for him, by explaining that life can get tough at school. And that there are times when we have to do things that we don't want to do. She tells him of all the new and great things that he will experience, in life. She then tells him the secret of the "kissing hand", which she had learned from her mother. Mrs. Raccoon kisses Chester's hand and tells him that if there is a time when he feels lonely he is supposed to press his hand to his cheek and think "Mommy loves you. Mommy Loves you." And the kiss will jump from his hand to his face and fill him with "toasty warm thoughts". Chester gives the kissing hand back to his mother and heads off to school. As, Mrs. Raccoon watches Chester run off to school, she presses her kissing hand to her cheek and knows that Chester loves her.
The books illustrations are warm and depict love. Each page has something different. Take time to notice all the different kinds of animals that it displays and what they animals are doing. I would assume that a child at a third grade level would be able to read this book, on their own. Those who maybe cannot read or read very well, shouldn't be left out. This book would only take about five to ten minutes, for an adult to read. Take some time to pause and look at the pictures and take in all "The Kissing Hand" has to offer. Chester's big, touching eyes, will make your heart swell with love for this book.
This book is great for any child or adult that needs a little reassurance that there is someone supporting them all the way. Although, it brings happy tears, it also brings so much comfort. Even to this day, when I read it, it gives me warm fuzzies and the assurance I need to press forward in my days at school.
