Wedding Flowers Made Easy

Written: Jan 05 '04 (Updated Jan 05 '04)
Pros:beautiful photos, helpful articles
Cons:lack of ideas for people on a budget
The Bottom Line: Worth taking some quiet time to read and extract ideas for any wedding.

One can argue that flowers are an important part of a wedding, and sometimes they turn out to be a very expensive part of the celebration. When it comes to flowers, there is so much to think about. A bride needs to decide her color palette, what flowers she will use to achieve her desired look, how much money she will spend and finally deciding on what florist to use. The Knot Book of Wedding Flowers is designed to be a guide of sorts, especially when it comes down to organizing and deciding what type of flowers to showcase at the wedding.

The Knot Book of Wedding Flowers is designed to display enormous amounts of information in a very simplistic way. It actually reminds me of a Martha Stewart magazine, with lots of helpful articles and information with plenty of beautiful photos as companions to the articles.

The book initially educates would be brides and grooms on the most popular types of flowers used in weddings. Here you will find descriptions of roses, calla lilies, and every other type of wedding flower imaginable. A few nontraditional choices are revealed as the book never fails to acknowledge that the bride may want a nontraditional wedding and reception. The guide will tell the reader when the flowers are usually available during the year and what type of environment the flower contributes to. For example sunflowers may contribute to a more relaxed and casual setting, while roses and lilies seem to set a more traditional and formal mood.

For a bride who is clueless when it comes to bouquets, The Knot Book of Wedding Flowers has beautiful pictures of different shapes of bouquets. Small articles that help determine which flowers work with each particular shape highlight most of the helpful pictures. There are even hints and tips about what bouquets work best with dress shapes. Immediately following this section is what I think stands out as one the most important parts of the book and that is determining a color palette. While white flowers seem to be most popular, more brides are learning toward pink, red, orange and blue flowers. Each color has magnificent photos, which show how the colors can either make the atmosphere elegant or quirky.

Interspersed throughout the book are the two pages of how-to guides, which illustrate how to create a wide range of items such as bouquets, centerpieces and boutonnières without using a florist. Although I know I’m not talented enough to try to create centerpieces and such, the guides are the best help when it comes to doing things by yourself. They come with a complete and detailed list of items you’ll need and the pictures show the projects step by step in very clear and crisp photographs.

Toward the end, the book provides a few different reception table looks with different color palettes. While this was interesting to look at, I could tell that the budgets for the photo shoots were enormous. Not every bride has that much money to spend on flowers so it would have been nice to see some inexpensive yet creative ideas.

More importantly a guide is provided that discusses what types of questions to ask florists and things you should look for in their portfolio. A note taking area accompanies this section, particularly helpful if the reader falls in love with something they see in the book.

The Knot Book of Wedding Flowers was a wonderful find at a local used bookstore. The pictures are gorgeous and the articles full of information yet still manage to be simplistic. This simplicity enables information to be very easy to navigate and digest, not to mention this book offers answers to almost every possible question a person could have regarding wedding flowers!
