The Lenox Hotel: A delightful surprise in Boston

The Bottom Line: Large, comfortable rooms, with lots of extras; tastefully and elegantly decorated. Helpful, attentive service, conveniently located in downtown Boston.

I stayed at the Lenox Hotel while attending a conference at another hotel a few blocks away. At first I was a bit put out by my Corporate Travel department for insisting that I stay at The Lenox, rather than the larger hotel where the conference was being held. However, I quickly realized the wisdom of our Corporate Travel office when I compared notes with other attendees staying at the conference hotel. The Lenox was far superior in room size and service.
This charming old hotel (built in 1900)has a small, rather unassuming lobby, tasteful and understated. There are two entrances into the lobby (the hotel sits on the corner) one right next to Samuel Adams Brew House (one of the hotels two full-service restaurants), the other just around the corner. It is located off Copley Square on the corner of Boylston and Exeter streets.
Dining
There is an upscale restaurant, Anago, just off the lobby (we didn't try it, but the menu looked elegant and pricey). We would have well exceeded our $25 per person dinner allowance in this restaurant.
There was a small, cozy dining area off the other side of the lobby where breakfast was served. The food there was good and service was prompt.
Room service was also offered, but I didn't try it -- unfortunately I didn't have a lot of time to spend in the hotel since we were constantly on the go.
My Room
I had a large corner room with fireplace (it was mid-summer so I didn't try it), large chandelier, two phones, two queen beds, and large closet. There was a large dresser and mirror, as well as another side table.
I also had two easy chairs (great for me to throw stuff on) and still had lots of "walking around" room.
The room was softly and elegantly decorated with subdued tones and satiny bedspreads. The floor felt a bit uneven as I walked across -- it was about the only sign that this was truly an older hotel. The recently completed $20 million renovation, gave The Lenox quite a lovely facelift.
Extras
I always love to explore and find what extras I have in my room. I was certainly not disappointed here:
* Nice, plush terry cloth bathrobes
* Iron and ironing board
* Extra pillows and blankets
* Color TV with optional movies
* Radio alarm clock
* Voice mail
* Two-line speaker phone with modem port (as always, this came in very handy)
*Complimentary copy of USA Today delivered to the rooms and also available in lobby
Very Nice Bathroom
The bathroom wasn't huge compared to the room, but it was plenty large enough for me and was filled with enough extras to make me feel quite special during my stay.
* Glass doors for tub - no yucky shower curtain
* Telephone (I always love this extra!)
* Hair dryer
* Lots of marble - with soft grey tones
* Big, fluffy towels (and plenty of them)
* Gilchrist & Soames goodies (always have to bring some of them back home)
In-Room Treat Basket
There was also a large treat basket in my room. This was, of course, for me to partake of at my own expense (with prices clearly posted). It included a nice variety of snack foods -- the cashews proved to be more than I could resist.
Upon receiving my statement under my door the morning of departure, I determined I had also been charged for a candy bar that I did not consume. This was politely and promptly removed from my bill upon checkout.
Overall Service
Everyone I came in contact with was very polite and helpful. The room was kept very clean and tidy and my bed was turned down for me at night, with a delicious chocolate left on my pillow.
Members of the staff whom I passed in the hallways were polite and friendly and the front desk staff was always ready to assist with directions or information.
Convenient Location
Staying in downtown Boston with no rental car, I was very happy to see there was a large shopping center a block away, as well as several nice restaurants and major department stores within easy walking distance. My granddaughter's first birthday was only a few days away and I was able to buy her present at FAO Schwartz.
I would not want to drive in Boston, so this was perfect location for me. I could look out my window and see Neiman-Marcus, walk across the street and eat a great steak, or walk a few blocks to catch the trolley tour. I got to see and do plenty from this centralized location. The doorman was always very helpful at providing directions or securing a taxi (when we were feeling lazy or running late).
Highly Recommended
I think The Lenox is a great value for the Boston area. Lots of room, great service, and reasonably priced. (I was receiving a corporate discount -- so it would be helpful for you to check with your travel department if you're traveling on business.) It was well worth walking 3-4 blocks to my conference to be able to stay in this charming hotel.
