| cullentr's Full Review: Nelson Demille - The Lion's Game |
This is the best book that I have read in months. In this story, we see the return of John Corey, the main character from Plum Island, another Demille story. He is now a member of a task force in New York City called the ATTF.
Assigned to go meet a Libyan terrorist who has turned himself in and is flying in from Paris to JFK with two CIA agents, Corey feels that something is wrong. It turns out that the defector, Asad Khalil, has managed to kill the three hundred persons on this plane with a toxic gas and escape from under their knows. He is now on a mission, but no one can figure out what he is trying to do. The reader knows that he is avenging the deaths of his mother, sisters, and brothers, for which he holds the Americans responsible. This is a Jihad, or Holy War, for Khalil.
This book moves from Flight 175 to D.C., the Carolinas, Long Island, Florida, Colorado, and California. Demille jumps back and forth - one chapter is from Khalil's perspective and the next from Corey's. Corey used to be an NYPD detective, and is apprehensive about working with the feds. His character is very funny.
There is a great love story between Corey and another character, who I will not reveal, as to not ruin the surprise. Also interesting; there is a very well-known, real-life target who is being hunted by Khalil. It is a great twist in the story.
The book is very long; the paperback is nearly 1000 pages. Yet, it is a quick read. I read it in four days, staying up late at night to finish it. You must know, this was during the finalexam period of my senior year of college, too!
I recommend this book for anyone interested in federal law enforcement, terrorism, Libya and its history, or someone who likes a good game of cat and mouse.
