| rangerlover2's Full Review: Nelson Demille - The Lion's Game |
The irreverent John Corey who we first met in Plum Island is back in an encore performance in Nelson DeMille's latest novel The Lion's Game.
The Lion's game has a terrific story line. Flight 175 from Paris is preparing to land in JFK with an alleged Libyan terrorist Asad Khalil alias The Lion onboard. Agents are waiting in Kennedy to take Khalil into custody. Everything seems to be fine until Flight 175 goes NORAD (no radio contact) with over 300 passengers and The Lion on board. This is the beginning of a reign of terror as The Lion stalks his prey across the United States.
John Corey is the wisecracking ex-NYPD detective who first met in Plum Island who is retired due to injuries suffered in a shoot out. In Lion's Game he is now working for the ATTF (Anti-Terrorist Task Force) and is one of the agents awaiting Flight 175's landing. I thoroughly enjoyed the further development in the Corey character. We already know he is a wise-cracking, rule-breaking cynic but this second book develops his character more and shows us a deeper depth to him.
Of course, John meets a new love interest Kate Mayfield and soon his sign-ficant other, Beth Penrose, of Plum Island is left in the dust. The interaction of Kate who is FBI and Corey meshes together well and they have a great "book" chemistry. Also back are Ted Nash of the CIA and George Foster of the FBI but to me their roles were fairly small. Another return character is Boris from The Charm School and informer for Libyan Intelligence.
Then there is The Lion, Asad Khalil. I think Nelson Demille did a great job in the development of this character. He shows the reason Khalil comes to the U.S. for revenge in some great flashback chapters to 1986 U.S. raid on Libya. Although you see what is driving him you also realize he is a man with no conscience and a cold blooded killer.
Will John Corey and Kate Mayfield find out the reason The Lion is on his death rampage before more die? Will they survive the chase?
This is a page turning thriller which is a good thing since in hardcover this book is 677 pages. However, at the last page you find yourself wishing for more.
I really recommend this as an excellent choice for any reader.
