| dkarmol's Full Review: Nelson Demille - The Lion's Game |
When I first heard about the plane hitting the World Trade Center on my way into work in Washington, DC yesterday, this book that I recently read immediately came to mind.
The author, Nelson DeMille, weaves a fascinating plot about a young man from Libya, whose family was killed when he was a boy during the 1975 raid on Muammar Quadaffi's home. The protagonist returns to the U.S. 25 years later to avenge his loss. The plot weaves into the fictional plot accurate details from the actual attack made on Libya in the early 80's to respond to the Libyan bombing of a disco in Berlin. These details make the story believable and chilling.
The main character is able to travel freely in the U.S., in ways that are quite believable, taking revenge by murdering those he believes responsible for the long-ago attack.
The plot gives insight into the attitude of those who can hold and nurture their hatred for many years, and then strike back with a willingness to lose their own life in the process of exacting revenge.
In DeMille's book the Libyan terrorist is pursued by a dedicated agent who comes within inches of catching him at several points. But the terrorist continues to escape, by renting private aircraft at small airports, paying cash all along the way. It was very believable, and anyone who has flown from small airports knows how little security there is, and how easy it would be for a terrorist to use such facilities to create havoc. Having just read the book when the first news of Sept. 11 came over my radio, one of my first thoughts was that a terrorist had done what DeMille wrote about, renting a plane, and then flying it into the building.
Without revealing too much, I was struck by some of the similarities between the plot of this book and what happened on September 11- the main point being, we are very vulnerable to attacks by persons who are willing to sacrifice their own lives for their cause.
Very chilling!
The book has plenty of details that make it a highly credible tale.
I highly recommend this book, and many other DeMille books. If you have not read DeMille before, you are missing out on a great writer of thrillers. His work is a bit like Tom Clancy's but not nearly so heavy in the opening character development and technical background material. DeMille gets right to the action, and generally it is hard to put one of his books down once you start. Great vacation/beach reading. He is a gifted writer, with the ability to write consistently entertaining and believable fiction.
