Love Your Liver and Live Longer

Reading this book has helped me realize how we often take our bodies for granted. For the past several weeks I’ve been experiencing what is known as a “foggy brain.” Some of you may laugh at this label, including me, at least I would have before these symptoms hit. On and off for the past several weeks I've been existing in sort of a mental fog. During this period of time I’ve found it’s not only disturbing, but it has prevented me from fully functioning.
Foggy brain hinders, almost prevents full concentration, as I’ve found myself having to repeatedly read paragraphs of material. Foggy brain prevented me from focusing. It has at times had me staring into space, with my mind becoming unsettled and going in several directions
For instance I’m taking this class. I’m sitting there hearing what the instructor says, but having much of it go right over my head. I was beginning to feel like the character in those Charlie Brown cartoons, the one with the cloud of dirt following him wherever he went. Only with me it was no cloud of dirt, but a hazy gray fog.
Then I started reading Dr. Cabot’s book, The Liver Cleansing Diet, which addresses the functions and maladies of the liver, how it performs, the work it must do within the body. Indeed one thing I learned from this book is that the liver is probably one of the most, if not the most hard working organ. Also that because of most people’s lifestyles, our liver often than not really has to work overtime, filtering out toxins and such, performing metabolic and regulatory functions.
The liver regulates carbohydrate metabolism, i.e. turning glucose into glycogen for storage. This in turn then releases glucose into the blood to maintain blood sugar levels. If anyone has experiences low blood sugar, which I also have been experiencing over the last couple of weeks, they will know this is a most unpleasant experience which will have your head spinning, and feeling as if you can’t take even another step. For some reason, at the beginning of this week, when I stopped one of my meds, I was experiencing difficulties maintaining sugar blood levels. Another symptom beside the foggy brain syndrome that has practically had me feeling somewhat incapacitated and almost nonfunctional. (This can be demonstrated by the lack of Epinions I have been unable to write during the course of these two weeks.)
The liver besides storing the glycogen, stores vitamins, which of course is essential to establishing good health.
It also regulates the metabolism of protein, and blood clotting factors, not to mention it makes sex hormone binding globulin. No need to guess what would occur or wouldn’t occur if that didn’t happen.
But most importantly, the liver detoxifies. And a liver that is unable to perform this detoxifying process because it contains its own build up of toxins can create what I’ve referred to earlier as “foggy brain.”
Although I do not drink alcohol, or if I do very very little, I do take medication for my thyroid and also estrogen, and up until last week a cholesterol lowering medication that with my doctor's permission of course I've been able to thankfully stop taking.
Certain medications do tax the liver, I’ve learned. And why I believe my liver may have been somewhat affected, especially by this third med, although tests have indicated otherwise.
This book has helped me learn what I can do to improve my situation, one being to take a herbal product known as Milk Thistle, or sylybum marianum a liver-protective, liver-regenerative, anti-hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant.
From other resources that I’ve checked, this herb is supposed to improve, strengthen, and at times mend dysfunctional livers. Believe me I’m not one to take anything like this unless I feel it would help my condition. Milk thistle benefits such conditions as chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver damage, bile stagnation, and alcohol and chemical induced fatty liver. Basically what it does is to block toxic effects.
I would like to think by incorporating what I’ve read so far in this book, I am helping to keep a vital organ healthy. In fact as I’m writing this, after having taken the Milk Thistle for several days, my foggy brain has cleared, and my blood sugar levels have stabilized. I’m not compelled to rest every two hours as I was having to do, and then eating some form of sugar raising substance, such as a banana or a bagel, which I’ve also had to do in order to be able to function at a somewhat normal level of activity. All of this I know points to hypothyroidism (which I do have) and that in turn can produce hypoglycemia. Further research that I've done on this confirms that the Milk Thistle can help.
This book basically gives us a liver-cleansing diet that takes approximately eight weeks. I’m only on the first week and feel so much better than I did just eight days ago.
The eight-week eating plan give a basic menu plan, broken down into the first two weeks, the middle four weeks, and the last two weeks. Also, this book provides many recipes at the back, healthy dips, soup stocks and sauces, salad dressing, salads, etc.
The philosophy of this book is to help a person learn how to keep their liver functioning at optimum levels.
“A healthy liver keeps the body clean, thereby protecting the immune system from overload and is fundamental to efficient metabolism and body weight control. Poor liver funtion, even of a slight degree, can cause far reaching and diverse health problems.”
Also I’ve lost some weight while on this diet, which it says will also happen. Essentially what happens is by cleansing the liver through healthful eating habits in turns boosts the metabolism.
Any book that shows us how to eat healthy at the same time help us to learn how to strengthen those vital organs such as the liver is a must especially for those who may be suffering from a host of maladies such as fatigue, high cholesterol, gall bladder disease, allergies, sugar cravings, inability to lose weight may want to read what this book has to say.
