Jennifer_Gibbons's Full Review: D. Wright - The Lonely Doll
I remember reading this book and loving it when I was a child-then forgot about it until an article in the literary journal Tin House did an article Dare Wright-and how she came to write the book. It made me want to reread the book again.
For those of you who haven't read the book, it's the story of a doll named Edith who lives all alone in a big house. As you can tell by the title, she is very lonely, until two bears come to join her.
What sets this book apart from others is that Ms. Wright took black and white photos instead of illustrations.(She used her own childhood dolls for the models-Edith is named after her mother) The first one has Edith looking out the window, looking very melancholy. Just that picture alone shows how lonely Edith is, just looking for friends.
The second one that touched me is when the teddy bears come to live with her. She is sitting with them while Mr. Bear tenderly pats her head.
They go on adventures(One of the best pictures is of Edith and Little Bear on the Brooklyn Bridge-it looks so big to two small dolls)
I forgot how much I loved The Lonely Doll-part of it is the simple photographs, how even though they are dolls Wright makes them look so alive-if it's Edith and the bears playing on the beach or Mr. Bear giving Edith a spanking, the photography is so striking.
The sad news is Ms. Wright slipped in a coma in 1994 and is on life support. I hope she knew that she wrote a book that was loved by generations of children, and it made them feel less lonely. How many other writers can leave that as their legacy?
