Bang For The Buck
Pros:lots of laughs, great action, excellent scripting
Cons:Chris Rock leaves the movie early.
The Bottom Line: Excellent movie for what it is. If you are looking for a dramatic blockbuster this isn't it, but as a comedy, it's hilarious.
As soon as I heard that Adam Sandler had another movie out, I knew that it was going to be huge. Then when I heard that one of my favorite comedians, Chris Rock was going to be in it... I knew that I absolutely had to see it. I couldn't think of a better combination than Sandler and Rock together in a movie.
I actually got to see the movie, after an old roommate, who moved away had left it behind by accident. I had never seen the movie before and had a date that night, so I figured it would be a good opportunity to check it out.

The Movie
In order to keep from ruining the movie, I will give only minimal information about the movie in order to preserve it's integrity, as I always do. If you are looking for a more in depth review that covers every aspect of the movie, so that you can live vicariously through the reviewer, this is not your review... so move along little donkey... but if you want just enough to make an informed decision... please carry on...
The movie is based around Adam Sandler's character who is an ex football superstar quarterback who throws a game in order to fulfill a gambling debt. He finds himself in trouble one night landing him in the prison system. The prison warden is vying to win a competition within the prison system and wants Sandler's help in getting his team ready for the competition. He figured that a win would help his chances for running for governor.
So Sandler is given a team of prisoners that he is to train and get ready for a game against the prison's official team of guards. Unfortunately, the team that he starts out with is a bunch of misfits, that barely know anything about the game of football, and the ones that do, are just horrible at it and completely out of shape. He realizes that in order to win he is going to need the help of the 'blacks' who are the 'speed'. The problem is that none of them want anything to do with him because of his past history of throwing games.
Quickly the guard and prisoner game becomes a wildly hyped game when the media realizes that Sandler is going to involved. But it's a race for Sandler to get his team prepared for game while at the same time dealing with a variety of set backs.
Acting
The acting in the movie is great. Everyone in the movie looks like they are just a bunch of guys who got together to play some football. It seems more like a backyard game of football the way everyone talks to each other. While this isn't a big time drama where acting is paramount, it is obvious that the movie was written in a manner that would seem more realistic and believable, while at the same time pushing the envelope of reality.
While the movie really lacks in the dramatic acting, even though there are a few dramatic moments, it makes up for it in the action, fast paced, and comedic performances, what are truly what make the movie what it is anyway.
The Comedy
There are a lot of hilarious moments throughout the movie, however it's not overdone. The movie has some very serious moments, but it never gets too dark, but at the same time the majority of the comedy in the movie avoids the slap stick, 'silly' comedy that many other movies use. Because of that, the large majority of the comedy in the movie comes through dialogue.
While the movie wasn't one that had me laughing non stop throughout the movie, it was definitely well balanced. Throughout the movie there was plenty of comedy to keep me laughing at regular intervals.
Overall
The movie used a great combination of humor and seriousness to create a truly excellent action comedy. The action scenes were a lot of fun to watch and really added to the comedic performances. By itself, the movie could be great even as a serious movie with some added comedic moments, but as a comedy, the movie is absolutely hilarious and fun at the same time.
When you aren't laughing, you will be hooked on the high paced action scenes in the movie, which at times are unrealistic, but are done in such a way that you find yourself questioning whether or not it is possible.
Probably the best thing about the movie, is the natural feel and roll of the movie. It plays out more like a home video than a movie in many parts. The players seem to interact like it's just a backyard game, than actors. This makes for a lot more realism in a completely unrealistic movie. The actors look like they are truly having fun with each other, rather than just acting like they are.
