The Frog Brothers Are Back For Blood! THE LOST BOYS: THE THIRST

Written: Oct 31 '10 (Updated Jan 24 '11)
  • User Rating: Very Good

  • Special Effects:
  • Suspense:
Pros:Rolicing good fun,  Frog Brothers, all grown up.  Cory Feldman really gets into it.
Cons:Definitely straight to video material.
The Bottom Line: Definitely a creature feature; a modern day Fearless Vampire Slayers. Sad to see Cory without Cory, but the Frog Brothers are Fearless Monster-Bashers!

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

Lost Boys: The Thirst (2010) Directed by Dario Piana

Edgar Frog: Death to all vampires?
Alan Frog: Maximum body count.
Edgar Frog: We are awesome monster bashers.
Alan Frog: The meanest.
Edgar Frog: The baddest.
[Roar at each other, then hug fiercely]
Edgar Frog: [Breaking Away] That's enough of that.

Poor Edgar Frog (Cory Feldman).  His friends Michael and Star are long gone, his friend Sam is dead and gone, and his brother, Allen (Jamison Newlander) has become one of the walking dead.  Now, he is about to be evicted from his crappy little trailer.  Life is hard.

Then vampire novelist Gwen Lieber (Tanit Phoenix) wants to hire Edgar to fetch her brother back from a kiss of vampires.  The problem is, these vampires are big league; their Master is DJ X (Seb Castang) and he throws Raves around the world.  The featured drug at these Raves is called "Thirst".   But Thirst is not a drug; it is simply vampire blood.  So all these idiot children looking for a good time are being turned into nightcrawling suckheads.  And according to Gwen, this blood comes from the Alpha; the first vampire.  If you kill a vampire, all the vampires they made are restored.  If you kill the head vampire, you should be able to Destroy All Vampires!

Edgar is at first sullen and reluctant, but then agrees.  However, Gwen has gotten plan B in place, Naturalist Lars Van Glees (Steven van Niekerk) think Bear Grylls with all the charm and sincerity of Ryan Seacrest.  But when going up against an army of vampires, the more the merrier.  Edgar brings his semi back up, Zoe (Casey B. Dolan), a girl who works at the old comic shop, and who knows the score about the undead.  Lars brings Claus (Joe Vaz) his camera man.

Can this unlikely assemblage of fearless Vampire slayers triumph over the oldest most powerful vampire on the planet?  Edgar and Allen Frog were first introduced in the classic 1987 Lost Boys.  Now, these comic book educated bastions against the powers of the Night return.  It is amazing what 23 years of living in terror can do to you.  Never that tightly wrapped to begin with, the Frogs have only gotten weirder, especially Edgar.  You would think it would be Allen, being made into a vampire, but no, he is still second banana to his gruff monosyllabic sibling.

The movie is a cliché of vampire hunter movies, right down to the splitting up the party, and the prerequisite comment about the stupidity of splitting up the party.  That is part of the fun; we know what's coming, just not when, or with what twist.

However, the over the top vampire hunters make for a great fun movie with extra cheese.  There is lots of senseless carnage and gratuitous gore, just the way you like it.  There is absolutely no redeeming social value, making this pure unadulterated cinematic junk food.  And that makes it perfect for Halloween, and for my "Let There Be Lips!" Rocky Horror Write Off.
