"I read the books at the dinner table instead of as bed-time stories. They ate and listened while I read."
That's a great idea. We have difficulty keeping our children (ages 5, 3, and 2) at the table, and reading to them just might do it. I'd have to pick a book that would interest them all, but that wouldn't be too hard to find.
Thanks for the comment, and the idea.

Great review... (Reply to this comment)
by gobbysreviews
You put all the important stuff in it: enough of the story line to pique an adult's interest, your daughter's reactions, what your child can learn, what you can discuss with your child while reading the book, and what versions are available.
I've never read these books, guess I'll have to check them out myself so I can recommend them to our patrons. On the other hand, I may just pull up your review, plunk them down in front of the screen, and let them read it for themselves.
P.S. I think I worked about one third of the way through the Tarzan series before my kid wanted to move on. We cheated though. I read the books at the dinner table instead of as bed-time stories. They ate and listened while I read.
It's always fun to read to your kids. Enjoy.

I look forward to Narnia. That series will be next on our list after Oz. We want her to be old enough to absorb the message before we start reading Narnia.
And you are right about how much children can remember. It amazes me too.

Wonderful tradition (Reply to this comment)
by lynnzop
Bret, you are starting a great tradition with your daughter in reading "chapter" books to her at night! I'm currently reading Narnia (the whole shebang) to my 7 year old, and the first question I ask him every night is "What happened last night?" He amazes me by remembering in great detail!
I remember the Oz books from my childhood - my grandmother had a stack of them and you're right - some were graphic! Will have to go to them next after completing the Lewis series.
Thanks for sharing!

Very thorough and comprehensive. Your daughter is lucky to have such a good daddy who will spend quality time with her! The memories of my reading to my daughter are still precious to me.

Actually, after Baum finished his 14 books, others went on to write many, many more. Some of the books by these other authors are considered among the best of the Oz books.
Thanks for the comment, and I hope you will give Oz a try.
It's a whole new world!

Re: My+first+comment+didn't+take.... (Reply to this comment)

I had a few crushes myself as a young child. There was a drawing a girl in one of Dr. Seuss' books, "Come over to my house", and I would spend hours fantasizing over that girl (she was the rich girl that lived in the mansion).
Had I read the Oz books as a child, I would have spent some time thinking about those fairy maidens and princesses as well.

My first comment didn't take.... (Reply to this comment)

...so I'll try and post again.
Wonderful review, Bret, that took me way back to when I was a little kid reading several of those wonderful hardcover Baum books, and falling madly in pre-p*bescent love with every single one of the drawings of those gorgeous princesses.
(Can you believe they filtered pre-p*bescent out? Maybe that's why my first comment didn't take!)
I mean, those princesses were GORGEOUS!
Thanks for the warm story and the trip down memory lane.
cheers,
nick

Thanks Jennifer,
I appreciate your comment, especially coming from an Advisor in Books. I am thinking about reviewing the others, but I don't think I will make them all as long as this one. In this first one I wanted to approach the review from the context of reading to my daughter. I don't think I'll do all of them that way though.
Thanks again,
Bret

your FIRST book review? amazing. really great job. i can't think of a thing you didn't include.
when i was a kid, my dad read me the wizard of oz at bedtime, and when i got a bit older, i read all the rest of the series on my own. glad someone else is starting on this tradition as well, and i hope you'll review the rest of the volumes in the series when you have a chance.

I have fond memories... (Reply to this comment)

...of my mother reading Oz books to me when I was young. Somehow I can't picture my 5 year old son sitting still long enough to listen to a story like this, even at a chapter at a time. Maybe I'm underestimating him...
Sure would be interesting if we had a Truth Pool around here, wouldn't it?
Nice job, Bret! :)

Thank you for your kind comments.
I do hope you, and others, will check out the Oz books. If you enjoy whimsical fantasy and tongue-in-cheek humor, you will enjoy Oz.

Good Reading (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for the good review. I hope your little Princess realizes that she has a Prince of a Dad. How wonderful her memories will be as a result of your story adventures.
I didn't know about those other books that Baum wrote, so this was a fresh revelation to me.
It's never too late to read children's books. I will look these up.
Thanks,
Lorace

Thanks, and I wish I could take credit for "meat people" but that is how the Scarecrow, the Tin woodman, and other "created characters" refer to people who are, well...made of meat.
Thanks for reading and for the comment.
