| Rock_On's Full Review: The Matrix: Revolutions |
Consider me a sucker, or consider me what ever you want, but both The Matrix: Reloaded and The Matrix: Revolutions have blown me away. They may not be the best when compared to the first movie, but they were still damn entertaining. Reloaded was an interesting movie experience, but Revolutions was twice as better, even coming close to the original. The Wachowski brothers received a lot of heat from Reloaded, and theyll also receive heat from Revolutions, but the way I look at them, I see them as movie Gods (next to Peter Jacksons Lord of the Rings trilogy). Reloaded and Revolutions were a big gamble for Larry and Andy, but thankfully there is a greater mass of fans that have enjoyed both films, and Im proud to say that I am one of them.
Matrix!
Revolutions starts off right where Reloaded left off with Neo in a coma and Agent Smiths hack into the real world on the table across from him. Theres a nice little intro that gets things going, which will then slide right into the beginning of Revolutions, and the end of the series. When looked at from a certain angle, Revolutions could ultimately be considered a stand alone product of The Matrix, instead of a real sequel. While Reloaded kind of continued questions from the first movie, Revolutions went a different direction, and brought up even more questions than were answered. Without giving any of the plot away, Revolutions takes place mainly in the real world with the war between man and machine going on. Somehow, Neo has been stuck in between the Matrix and the real world, and hes got to get out of there and stop Agent Smith and the machines.
By no means is Matrix: Revolutions a bad movie, but even as a giant Matrix fan, there were tons of parts in the movie that just dragged on and on for way too long. There also isnt much action seen inside the Matrix except for the explosive finale between Neo and Agent Smith. The slo-mo effects are what really made the Matrix, and so when they were pretty much gone from Revolutions, a slight disappointment slipped into my mind. Like many have stated, the final showdown between Neo and Agent Smith is gorgeous, and made the 2 hours of movie before it seem like a 2 minute intro to an incredible finale. The only real problem I had with the showdown was trying to distinguish whether the Wachowski brothers were trying to go back to The Matrix roots with the incredible special effects, or if they were trying to turn Neo into superman. Thats all Ive got to say about that.
Taking on the style of The Two Towers, Revolutions had three parallel events happening at once. The machine squids are attacking Zion, Agent Smith is taking over programs and humans at a very fast speed, and Neo is stuck in between the real world and the Matrix. Memorable fights werent as plentiful in Revolutions as they were in Reloaded and The Matrix, but instead is made up of small fights that lead up to an interesting fight in Zion, and one HELL of a finale. Revolutions story didnt quite retain the same feel as the first two movies, and was really quite dependent on some over the top special effects (yet very cool looking).
Even though Revolutions is suppose to be the finale, questions still werent answered. Revolutions ended up doing a circle, coming back around to the original Matrix. Its doubtful that the Wachowskis even knew what theyre trying to do, because instead of ending a massive trilogy, they created a giant circle. Thats what it is, a circle of questions, movies to make us think, thats what the movies are for. Revolutions ending wasnt really what was expected by many people, and so there are going to be a bunch of surprised movie goers. Everything that has a beginning, has an end.
Theyre Special Alright
Since Keanu Reeves cant act, Revolutions laid a heavy dependence on the special effects. After leaving the theater and meeting up with everybody at Steak n Shake for a light night recap of the night, second to the final fight talk, the special effects were the talk of the trade. Keanu didnt do that bad in the first movie, but in Reloaded he was just stiff as all get out. Larry and Andy Wachowski must have gotten tired of trying to make a good actor out of Reeves, and so they just popped some of those special effect pills (the GREEN ones!). The special effects are nice, and I really liked them, its just that they were REALLY overused. The fight between Zions forces and the machine squid was of the highest most cool of coolness, and the rest of the movie wasnt too reliant on excessive special effects, but that final fight between Smith and Neo over did it. Since when did Neo turn into a super hero? Im not going to spoil anything, but the special effects were really overused at a certain point in the final battle. Trust me, youll KNOW when that point is. Personally, I miss the feel of the original, both Reloaded and Revolutions feel like stand alone action movies with the ongoing confusion of questions between them.
Trinity!
Ive said it once, and Ill say it again, Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) is one helluva chick. Trinity played an important role in every movie, but never was that feeling of sympathy for that girl no more than it was in Revolutions. The love between her and Neo (Keanu Reeves) is stronger in Revolutions, resonating at every possible chance. No wonder Keanu is so stiff, Trinitys a babe (*wonders if anyone caught on*). The same cast returns in Revolutions pretty much, mainly Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity, since they are the stars after all. Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) didnt get much screen time in Revolutions, so that was kind of sad. Ghost (Anthony Wong) and Niobe (Jada Pinkett Smith) get much bigger roles in Revolutions, finally getting their chance to strut their stuff. There are a few new characters, though they arent fleshed out enough to get attached to, theyre just kind of there. Filler characters, thats what I call them.
Every Beginning, Has An End
Overall, The Matrix: Revolutions was a nice finale to the trilogy, despite the giant circle they took us in. The special effects are top notch, the fight scenes were huge, and it leaves open plenty of discussable questions that may never be answered. Another movie after Revolutions is highly unlikely, and if Larry and Andy were smart, they wouldnt make any more and end up ruining all of the movies values. By all means, make your movie experience complete by seeing it in the theater, because it just isnt the same on a regular entertainment center.
happy viewing
