Nice review..... (Reply to this comment)

Hey, Bru,
I liked your review of Mote; I've never read it, but have heard of it; seems interesting!
You might, however, want to edit Close Encounters' title to read Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Other than that, this write-up is exemplary.
Cheers!

He gave a lecture here at the library. We host an author/poet just about every week--part of trying to be the heart of the university.
He is getting on in years, but that's part of what makes him interesting. He's been as much a computer science journalist as an SF author, and along with his writing tips he waxed nostalgic about politics and the ways computers have changed writing.
Sadly, I was too busy schmoozing up to someone else and didn't get to talk to Pournelle at the post-lecture meet'n'greet.

Footfall was by the same authors, but not a sequel. I think the Ringworld books are sort of sequels, too, since I think they all take place in Niven's "Known Universe". But I'm not sure. Footfall doesn't, however.

I agree, at least it's one of the best I've ever read.

Interesting. He must be getting on now, this book was written in the seventies. Did you see him at a convention?

Right The Gripping Hand was the sequel. And it was AWFUL! I just forget it was ever written.
Lucifer's Hammer is actually pretty good.

The Gripping Hand was the mediocre sequel. I haven't even bothered linking my review of it to my review of Mote.
Ah well, there have been far worse books written. It suffers mostly from the necessary comparison to Mote.

is that dreadful sequel to The Mote... What was it, Footfall? I refuse to remember.
Yep - one of the finest SciFi books ever written, and something like thirty years old now. That's truly sad.

And this is one of the best SF novels ever in my humble opinion.

Thanks for reminding me I still need to read Lucifer's Hammer.
I saw Pournelle speak a few weeks ago. Quite the character. His advice on writing was, not exactly helpful, but apt.

I rate higher than Heinlein? Wow! That's the best compliment I've received in a long time!
Thanks Jan!

Heinlein hasn't impressed me so far so that's not a helpful factor, but your taste impresses me enough that I'll check it out. :-)
