Opinion Summary
What Disney is Teaching Your Children
by JediKermit | Dec 26 '02
Pros: An excellent look at the Darker Side of Disney
Cons: Some of his claims would apply to any large corporation, not just the Mouse House

I don't have kids or a tv, and I would just as soon cut off my right hand as visit a Disney theme park, but I love books that contribute to this sort of culture jamming. This book sounds like a good 'un. Great review too.

thanks,

I've heard of this book many times before, the title has been thrown around in many of the Disney-related chat rooms and newsgroups I've participated in.

I've been to Celebration, however, and not encountered any problems with going there. There was no security preventing me or questioning me about my reasons for being there. I simply drove in and parked "in town" to have lunch at the restaurant. There's a current exhibit in the Studios about Walt Disney and his dreams of what a real "Community of Tomorrow" was supposed to be. It wasn't what EPCOT has now become, but it was the general aim of Celebration, although I think it missed the mark.

Also, I have friends who work for the Mouse. One in particular is a shop steward for the union. Though I hear stories that definitely indicate there are problems in "the happiest place on earth" I really don't think it's much worse than many other corporations in this country. They are still a business and have stockholders to answer to. Though I think there are many short-sighted decisions being made by the current management (and it's time for M.E. to go), I think that people tend to forget the fact that it is a business, first and foremost and expect it to be something else.

This is a subject that is of interest since I will soon be having a little one of my own, and I've already thought a lot about the messages that Disney (and others, too) send to our children. I certainly don't want my girl to aspire to be the Little Mermaid (or for that matter most female Disney characters)! I'll have to check this out. Great review!

I agree with you, in fact as much as I enjoyed Lilo & Stitch, the whole ending of that movie just smacked of something that will no doubt soon lead to the tv-show. Never before had I seen an ending in a Disney movie that smacked and yelled so much: WE'RE READY FOR TV NOW!

Cheers,

- Steve =)

I've always preferred the Disney classics and haven't watched many of the new ones. Boring mostly.
