jcgrow's Full Review: Armin A. Brott - The New Father: A Dad's Guide to ...
As an expectant father, I've been looking desperately for books to help clue me in to what I'm about to go through, but it seems like every one is written for mothers. They talk about what's happening to "your body" as a result of "your pregnancy" and pretty much ignore the presence of the fathers except to suggest that new mothers try their best to put up with their bumbling ways. I began to think that I would never find a book to address my needs as a new father without ignoring or insulting me.
Thankfully, I found The New Father: A Dad's Guide to the First Year. This book is written with the assumption that I've had for years, that fathers can be and should be equally responsible and equally respected as parents.
The fact is that men can change diapers and soothe babies just as skillfully as women, so long as we are given the chance. This book shows us how to do it, giving a detailed and well-written of what we can do to help make the first year of a baby's life as enjoyable and productive as possible. The author doesn't pull any punches: from cracked nipples to penis-washing, Brott lets us know what we're in for.
My wife has yet to give birth, but partially due to the frank and encouraging tone and content of The New Father, I feel confident that I will be able to work through the most disgusting, humiliating, frustrating, confusing, and downright beautiful times of my baby's first 12 months. This is truly a must buy!
