| nmurat's Full Review: The Odeon |
The Odeon has been an anchor tenant in TriBeCa (in downtown manhattan, aka Triangle Below Canal) and is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Just to give you a sense of it, the Odeon restaurant is featured on the cover of "Bright Lights Big City" the great ueber-eighties novel by Jay McInerney later turned into a so-so movie with Michael J. Fox.
Now - for a restaurant to just survive in New York for 20 years, that's something worthy of a life achievement award. For a restaurant to be still so popular is almost unheard of.
As someone who lives around the corner from the Odeon, I go there quite a lot and have always enjoyed my eats and drinks there.
The ambience is great - the Paris brasserie/bistro look is chic yet relaxed with high ceilings and mirrors on the walls. There is a great big bar where customers enjoy the famous Cosmopolitans while they wait for a table or just want to hang out. The bar staff, and staff in general, is friendly and courteous.
The food is quite solid. While other reviews rightly praise the burgers and other bistro items, do indeed try some of there items on the menu. You can't go wrong with really any of them (I've tried them all I think).
On the appetizer side, the country salad, goat cheese salad and country pate are quite tasty. For the main course, I think they are best with the best with the meats and grilled fish (definitely try the grilled tuna plate or sandwich with light wasabi sauce) though the risotto is great if you are hungry.
While I am not a desert person myself, I must say that they make some rather tasty ones. Go for the Graham Cracker Banana Tart - it tastes as good as it looks - and the Creme Brulee without forgetting the obligatory espresso.
Anytime I walk by The Odeon on my way home at night, there are always people there. They even serve till 3am on Friday & Saturday, so you can be hungry at any time and still be able to enjoy some cool company, a nice drink and some great food. Try it out also on weekends for Brunch or sit outside on their terrace in the summer and be a real Parisian as you people watch.
While The Odeon is not "cheap" it's very reasonable by New York standards and provides solid food, great service and grand atmosphere.
