For those of you who have played Scrabble at some point in your lifetime, you will likely be able to relate to this situation:
There is not much space left on the board, and it is your opposition's turn. Connecting to the letter O, they spell out the word "GONOPORE". Your spontaneous reaction is to say, "That is NOT a real word!"
Now if you have no dictionary accessible, they have no way of proving you wrong. But if you have The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary by the Selchow & Righter Company handy, consider yourself in luck. You open up the book to the G section, and locate the word "GONOPORE", to find that the word does in fact exist. Tell me honestly, how much tension and Scrabble anger did that prevent? Personally, I have found myself in bitter arguments over the existence of a single word while playing Scrabble. Now there is just no need.
The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary contains every word you could possibly imagine, along with a very short yet descriptive definition. This saves you the trouble of buying a good quality dictionary with small print, 2000 pages, and confusing, complicated definitions. To be exact, this hardcover book is only 662 pages(this was the 1st edition published in 1978; more recent editions may vary). In Scrabble, thick books and long definitions have no relevance at all, hence they are just not necessary.
