chrispys-mom's Full Review: Edward Lear and Paul Galdone - The Owl and the Pus...
The Owl and the Pussycat, written by Edward Lear and illustrated by Jan Brett (a G.P. Putnam's Sons' board book) is a gorgeously-illustrated version of a classic children's story. The colorful, painstakingly-detailed illustrations make this one of my favorite books to read to my son, as we spend quite a bit of time making new discoveries about the tropical and aquatic scenes depicted in the book.
The familiar story-poem starts, "The Owl and the Pussycat went to sea in a beautiful pea green boat..." The couple set out on a romantic voyage, complete with serenades, exotic feasts, a long-delayed proposal, and a marriage officiated by a turkey using a ring procured from a pig on a nearby island. Along the way, there are beautiful scenes of sea life and tropical islands as well as very expressive depictions of the interactions between the gallant Owl and his Pussycat bride. If you look carefully, you can witness another romance blooming between two of the fish.
My son loves animals and is fascinated by aquariums, so this has been one of his favorite books since he was one year old. (He is now two-and-a-half, which means this book has had impressive longevity to remain on his favorites list.) As someone who loves art, I cannot stop marveling over the detail of the pictures. The sing-songy rhymes make it fun to read--although you can get a little silly at certain parts if you're not careful.
There may be other versions of this story available at bookstores. However, I highly recommend the version illustrated by Jan Brett if you can get it.
