Pros: I was swept away to a land of nonsense, a land of rhyme

Cons: It doesn't last forever, forever by the light of the moon

The Bottom Line: It's nonsense and rhyme I wish I could spend all of my time Reading this poem I'd love to just sit at home Reading this poem

This Reader and the Memories

This girl and her mother rode in the car
In an ancient blue car they rode
The mother got bored and soon poetry soared
out of her lips and the girl's wonder growed
Mom spouted out strange things about missing toes
And popples whatever they are
"Mommy!" She cried! "What's them?" she asked
They come from a nonsense poem without par
Without par
Without par
She said as we rode in the car

That night I asked again as we sat in the den
She said to me "Let me introduce you to Edward Lear"
Upstairs she led me, having already fed me
We settled in and she whispered in my ear
"The Owl and the Pussycat went to sea"
And I was swept away on that day
To a land of nonsense, a land of rhyme
And when we were done I wanted to stay
To stay
To stay
Immersed amid new friends I wanted to stay

I lay there that day after mom put the book away
Remembering the silly words and the funny lines
Each quick little drawing I clearly recall redrawing
In my mind the shapes all the signs
Of infatuation showing my lifelong love was growing
That day was my start my very first
Glimpse of verse so strangely devoid of meaning
Since then I have hardly quenched my thirst
My thirst
My thirst
For nonsense verse I have not quenched my thirst.

The Poet and the Reader

The poet and the reader went on a journey
In a beautiful piece of whimsy
They took imaginary owls and a surplus of vowels
And a pussy full of vim - see
They traveled by boat under the cloak
Of stars and strumming guitars
Falling in love, the owl bespoke
Of the beautiful cat no flaw tars
under the stars
under the stars
This beautiful cat no flaw mars

The pussy impressed began to address
The charming owl's song
They decided to marry and not to tarry
But without a ring it was wrong
Our tale continues on until the two happened upon
A land with hyphenated things
And there amid trees they find a pig and he's
Holding a ring - in his nose it swings
It swings
It swings
A pig with a ring that swings

They barter and bargain with the swine
Who gave up his ring
Off they went to wed and they spent
their lives together they cling
But first they ate and they danced
While the poet got more and more clever
Inventing words galore and then some more
Runcible in hand they danced forever
Stopping never
Stopping never
Lear made them dance on forever.

The Man and the Words

The man and the sick child sat
Inside, it was dreary
Feeling sad and depressed, she he addressed
About an owl to the weary
Girl who added the pussycat and the honey
To the tale of mirth
Giving them a boat and some money
She sent him off to write
To write
To write
The man went off to write

Born in Victorian London Town
How charmingly he rhymed
Entertaining and merry, he wasn't very
happy but for her he was primed
To write his days and nights away
So he set sail and started to nail
The words and creatures he so joyfully features
He sets the owl and the cat on their tale
What a tale
What a tale
The pussycat and the owl's tale

Dear Edward why are you willing to use words so thrilling
as "Bong-Tree" and "Piggy-Wig"
Lear got great pleasure and tossed in "runcible" for good measure
"Not real words? I don't give a fig"
It's all nonsense I have no pretense
Just to cheer that girl in France
I'll write it all down just to remove her frown
By the light of the moon I'll make them dance
Them dance

By the light of the moon the owl and pussycat dance.
