maggsmomm's Full Review: Edward Lear and Paul Galdone - The Owl and the Pus...
This children's classic, written by Edward Lear and illustrated by Jan Brett is a moving rhyme about the love shared between an owl and a pussycat.
The book begins when the owl and the pussycat decided to sail the seas. You can assume it is a long journey because they took plenty of money and food, or should I say "honey".
Their voyage was a romantic one under the stars, the owl serenading the pussycat, proclaiming his love for her beauty. The illustrations show the pussycat is quite flattered by the owls sweet song.
As they sailed on in their boat named the "Promise" they decided they must be married yet neither had a ring. They sailed on for more than a year when they finally reached their destination.
Once upon land they found a pig that held a ring, through his nose and the owl offered the pig money for his precious ring. The pig gladly accepted and the owl and the pussycat were married by a turkey shortly after.
The returned to their boat, happily married and they ate as they floated away from the land. Once again they reached another destination and danced beneath the brightly shining moon.
This book is filled with the most colorful and beautiful scenery making it a pleasure for parents and children alike.
Since it is a rhyme, the sentences are short, yet precise. Each page holds something new to marvel at, and the owl and the pussycat are quite charming for being such an odd pair.
There are 13 pages where each sentence does connect to the first to the second and so forth. The print is rather large, so it is easy for small children to read and sound out the words.
This a book I highly recommend for any child. Not only is it a classic, but it brings quality time with your child while exploring an awesome adventure.
