Pros: Well written, many unexpected turns, makes you think
Cons: Gets little boring somewhere in the middle
The Bottom Line: Can you plan a perfect crime with a partner? How much would you be willing to give away for a quiet life with a woman you love? 90 Million Dollars?
I love the way John Grisham paints characters on his books. Main character here is Patrick Lanigan, lawyer who gets away killing himself and disappearing with 90 million dollars from a shady settlement in which his lawfirm was involved.
Patrick Lanigan lives quiet life as refugee but he always has nagging feeling that someone is about to catch him, 90 million dollars is too much money to disappear with.
He fells in love with a beautiful Brazilian woman and decides to plan his own capture and try to escape any sentence by carefully orchestrating his every move.
Not everything goes by exactly as planned but Patrick Lanigan lands in hospital back in the United States accused of many things starting with murder. Did he kill young Pepper Scarboro and burn him on a car stating his own dead? How could you explain Pepper's hunting gear underneath Lanigan's bed in his hunting cabin? Would Patrick Lanigan be convicted for life for murdering this young boy?
As always with John Grisham there is plenty more to the story and little by little you will learn what actually happened before Patrick Lanigan disappeared and left his cheating wife and young daughter to collect hefty life insurance policy.
I was very drawn to this book until about halfway through. Then it started to get tad boring. Too much speculation and little action, complicated characters and frankly whole storyline started dragging a bit.
I could never understand why Lanigan would spill his guts to the judge who was in charge before excusing him for being too close of a friend of Patrick Lanigan. It just did not make any sense to me.
Patrick Lanigan seemed to play all his cards just the way he wanted and even after giving all that 90 million plus interest back he would be able live rest of his life peacefully and very comfortaby in Brazil, or could he after all?
I'm glad I read this book and I'd say it is a good book even if not John Grisham's best work. After all you have learned to expect maybe too much from Grisham. Characters are colorful, there is many unexpected turns and just to think about disappearing and starting fresh is a thought most of us fantasize about, what would it be like? Would it be worth it? Can you find true love somewhere else?
Why not read this book and see how it turned out for Patrick Lanigan!
For the years, Patrick had often wondered how it would feel if they caught him.Now he was terror-stricken. Practically naked and strapped down like an...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
