Great location but in need of a face-lift

Pros:Location, architecture and cost
Cons:In need of a makeover and new service.
The Bottom Line: This hotel is well below what it was and can be after a major renovation
The Plaza has arguably the best location of any hotel in NYC. The public rooms are impressive but have an excess of gilt, probably from the time Donald Trump renovated the hotel during the late 1980's. The Palm Court serves a terrific tea which is actually a bargain at $35 per person including scones, sandwiches and even caviar. The new 1 CPS brasserie is great. The room is a beautiful marriage of old time Plaza luxe with a modern Philippe Starcke sensibility. The food is simple French- style brasserie. The service through out the hotel was quite spotty. Our junior suite was a bit ragged. The two chairs in the living room (no sofa) were stained and needed to be refinished. The carpeting needed to be replaced and there was an overall musty feel to the room. Despite offering bathrobes in the hotel shops, there were none in our suite. The room price at around $400 per night was quite reasonable by NYC standards but overall this really is a hotel that has faded from high five stars to high four stars. Forget seeing celebrities as most guest seem to be the type that feel that this hotel is the best in New York. it is not;by a mile
