veganweb's Full Review: The Presidents of the United States of America by ...
I have to admit I backed into listening to the PotUSA. I heard Weird Al's parody of 'Lump' called 'Gump' and loved it. While working at a Hardee's we heard 'Peaches' many times on the musak. My coworkers hated it, but I thought it was a catchy little ditty. So, when I saw the album for sale used, I decided to give it a shot.
To my surprise the are more catchy tunes on the album than the two I've mentioned.
The band, and I don't even know if they're still together, is a trio. Guitar, bass and drums. Their 'hook' as it were was that they decided that they didn't need all those strings on their instruments. So they play the three stringed guitar and two stringed bass (I believe that's correct). Surprisingly they actually do a pretty good job with only half the strings of a standard band.
This really is a fun album. The band doesn't take themselves or anything else seriously. The songs are short, clocking in between 1:30 and 3:00 on average. Their mindset can be best summed up on "We're not gonna make it" where they sing "There's a million better bands/with a million better songs/drummers who can drum/singers who can sing."
